Akron Wins Meet Against In-State Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio – Junior Kennedy Lovell and sophomore Madison Giglio each won one event Friday night, but the Toledo women’s swimming and diving team fell in a dual meet at the UT Student Rec Center against No. 25 Akron Friday night, 212-88.

“We had many standout performances tonight against a tough competitor,” head coach Brie Globig said. “It was a chance to show our mental toughness and we did just that.”

Lovell won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:52.70. She also produced a second-place finish in the 50 free at 23.81.

Giglio’s first-place finish in the one-meter dive was good enough to get her into the post-season, with a season-best and NCAA zone qualifying mark of 268.35. Giglio is the second Rocket this season to qualify for the postseason. Senior Joelle Gallais qualified for the platform at the West Virginia Diving Invitational (Nov. 20). Giglio was runner-up on the three-meter with a season-best score of 269.33.

Waiting in the wings of the Rockets’ schedule is one more crack at the Battle of I-75 on Saturday, Feb. 12 as the Rockets host Bowling Green in the Student Recreation and Pool. The meet will be streamed on BCSN/ ESPN+.

TOLEDO, Ohio – The No. 25 ranked Akron Zips Swimming & Diving claimed 14-of-16 events en route to a 212-88 dual meet win over the Toledo Rockets at the UToledo Student Recreation Center and Pool on Friday.

With the win the Zips moved to 4-1 in dual meet action as junior Sarah Watson (Winnipeg, Manitoba), senior Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland) and senior Olivia Gardner (Bromsgrove, England) each won two individual events. Watson claimed the 150-yard butterfly (1:28.14) and the 50-yard freestyle (23.54) while Nogaj recorded wins in the 150-yard backstroke (1:28.78) and the 50-yard butterfly (25.03). Gardner recorded wins in the 150-yard freestyle (1:23.20) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.87).

Other individual event winners included: senior Brooke Lamoureux (Victoria, Canada) in the 500 Free (5:06.76), freshman Abigail Daniel (Bristow, Va.) in the 100 IM (57.66), sophomore Madelyn Gatrall (Windsor, Ontario, Canada) in the 50 Back (26.26), senior Andrea Fischer (Oak Grove, Minn.) in the  50 Breast (29.78) and junior Sara Bozso (Budapest, Hungary) in the 150 Breast (1:44.88).

The Zips won both relay events as 200-yard medley relay team of Gatrall (26.35), Fischer (29.01), Watson (24.19) and Sofia Henell (23.39) stopped the time first with a 1:42.94 time. And, the 200-yard freestyle relay team on Nogaj (23.69), Watson (23.17), Rachel Schiffli (23.83) and Henell (23.31) topped the winner’s podium.

In addition, junior Paige Kalik (Irwin, Pa.) captured the gold for the 3-meter diving event (282.60 points) and silver on the 1-meter board (263.33 points).

The Zips will travel to Ohio State for the OSU Winter Invite on Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 10-12 at The Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio.
