The first finals session of the 2025 European Short Course Championships unfolded in Lublin, Poland and Angelina Köhler broke her own German Record in the 50 butterfly.

The 25-year-old stopped the clock in 25.06 to tie with Denmark’s Martine Damborg, who set a new European Junior Record, to win the first of two semifinals. Their times are tied for second-fastest heading into tomorrow’s final.

Köhler’s time undercut the 25.31 she swam to win the German Short Course title in mid-November. That effort sliced .18 off the former German mark of 25.49 Aliena Schmidtke put on the books at the 2017 European Short Course Championships.

Entering this season, Köhler’s lifetime best in this event rested at the 25.70 she clocked to finish 11th at the 2023 edition of these championships. That means she has chopped 0.64 seconds off her personal best with the final still to come in less than 24 hours’ time, where she could challenge the 25-second barrier.

She holds all four German sprint fly records: the 50 and 100 in both long course and short course.

Köhler had her big international breakthrough at the 2024 Long Course World Championships, where she claimed the 100 fly world title with a 56.28 in the final after setting the German record of 56.11 in the semifinals. That swim earned her gold by three-tenths of a second and made her the reigning world champion heading into the Paris Olympics. She also placed 5th in the 50 fly and 20th in the 50 free at that meet.

Her momentum continued into the Paris Olympics, where she finished 4th in the 100 fly final with a 56.42, just 0.16 off the podium. Her 2024 performance ranked her 4th globally in the 100 fly, trailing Gretchen Walsh (55.18), Torri Huske (55.52), and Regan Smith (55.62).

This past summer, she touched the wall fourth in the 50 fly (25.50) and sixth in the 100 fly (56.57) at the World Championships in Singapore, with the 50 representing her current German Record while she was a few tenths off her 100 best.

Her performances today are a promising sign for the upcoming long-course season, where she’s historically been stronger.

Later in the week, Köhler is slated to contest the 100 and 200 fly, where she’s the seventh and ninth seed. She’s the defending champion in the 200 while she claimed silver at the last edition in the 100 fly. She owns season bests of 56.45 and 2:07.54 in the two events.

Her 200 fly personal best of 2:03.30 sits less than three-tenths shy of Franziska Hentke‘s longstanding German Record of 2:03.01 from the 2015 European Championships, while her 55.50 100 PB puts her in contention for gold alongside Sweden’s Louise Hansson and Belgium’s Roos Vanotterdijk.
