Daria-Mariuca Silisteanu, 16,  broke her own Romanian National Record in the women’s 50 backstroke on her way to winning the bronze medal at the 2025 European Junior Championships this afternoon.

GIRLS 50 BACKSTROKE – FINAL

  • World Junior Record: 27.49, Minna Atherton (2016)
  • European Junior Record: 27.51, Daria Vaskina (2019)
  • European Record: 27.10, Kira Toussaint (2021)
  • Championship Record: 27.74, Mary-Ambre Moluh (2022)
  • 2024 European Junior Champion: 27.94 Sara Curtis (ITA)

GOLD –  Blythe Kinsman (GBR), 27.79
SILVER – Martine Damborg (DEN), 28.18
BRONZE – Daria-Mariuca Silinsteanu (ROU), 28.26

Silisteanu came in at 28.26, which is exactly two tenths faster than the 28.46 she went at this meet in 2023.

This is her third time breaking the 50 backstroke record in the last two years. She first broke it in semi-finals at the 2023 European Junior Championships, swimming 28.59, and then she rebroke that record in finals, where she went 28.46.

Before Silisteanu, the record belonged to Diana Mocanu in 28.73 from 2002.

In March, Silisteanu competed at the Romanian National Championships, where she won the 50, 100, and 200 backstroke events.

She still has the 100 backstroke left to compete this week.
