The 2025 European Junior Championships officially came to a close last night but not before the nation of Great Britain sealed its spot atop the overall medal table.
GBR amassed a total of 19 medals, including 9 golds, 5 silvers and 5 bronze.
Its gold medal haul was more than twice that of runners-up Italy who captured 4 gold among its 14 pieces of hardware haul.
Spain was 3rd, followed by Lithuania and Turkey who finished in 4th and 5th places, respectively.
As for Great Britain, the champion nation’s performance surpassed what transpired last year. There in Lithuania, GBR placed 7th overall, with this year’s vast improvement signaling a plethora of bubbling talent waiting to break through the senior ranks.
On the final day of action, Filip Nowacki gave GBR a gold in the 100m breaststroke after Amalie Smith successfully won gold in the 200m IM.
Dean Fearn helped the cause with a gold in the boys’ 50m fly while the boys’ medley relay also found success to give the nation its 4th medal on the final day.

When did Great Britain last top the medal table, and why weren’t the neutral athletes’ medals counted towards the table?
2011 I believe. 6 golds and 19 medals. Siobhan Marie O’Connor was the star with 3 golds.
I’m guessing the neutral athletes aren’t on the medal table because that a team “competition” and the neutral athletes are not a team as such.
It’s always a notoriously difficult table to top when Russia are competing.
There’s a very exciting crop of young swimmers coming through for Great Britain, but as we’ve seen in the past with some talents, there’s been a recurring struggle to align top-tier athletes with the right coaching environments.
Tim Jones sent them all to David McNulty, where Dean aside (for a short window), they failed!
