About Glacier Swim Club

Glacier Swim Club (GSC) is a year-round USA Swimming-affiliated competitive swim team located in beautiful Juneau, Alaska. We are a well-established nonprofit corporation (founded in 1973) with ~200 active club members. We have a proud tradition of competitive excellence, community engagement, and athlete development. GSC works in cooperation with the City and Borough of Juneau Parks and Recreation at both of the local pools to provide high-quality coaching to swimmers of all levels and ages, from novice to national competitors. We are passionate about fostering a lifelong love of swimming while helping athletes reach their full potential in and out of the pool.

Position Summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Head Coach to lead our program. The ideal candidate is passionate about coaching, committed to swimmer development, has strong leadership skills, and can maintain our positive and inclusive team culture. The Head Coach is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the swim program, including coaching, program development, day-to-day team operations, staff supervision, meet preparation, and fostering a positive team culture. This is a full-time, year-round position.

Key Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Board of Trustees, the swim team Head Coach is responsible for the direct supervision and leadership of the Glacier Swim Club year-round competitive swim team.

Leadership and Coaching

  • Provide on-deck coaching and supervision at practices and regional, state, and national swim meets 
  • Plan and implement a comprehensive training program for all skill levels, from beginners (Learn-to-Swim and Pre-Competition swim groups) to senior-level athletes and Masters swim group
  • Create workout routines that focus on technique, endurance, strength and mental conditioning
  • Lead and inspire swimmers in practice and competitions, and create a positive, inclusive, and athlete-centered team culture and atmosphere
  • Represent the club in regional swimming communities
  • Responsible for the direct coaching of at least one level of swimmers
  • Provide feedback, goal setting and support to swimmers
  • Actively participate in annual professional development and create professional development plans for the coaching team that support continuous growth and development
  • Manage, mentor, train and schedule coaching staff to ensure program consistency and swimmer safety

Team Management and Administration

  • Ensure and demonstrate effective communication between coaches, swimmers and parents
  • Coordinate team activities including practice schedules, meet schedules, meet entries, team travel and other team events
  • Maintain compliance with USA Swimming Safe Sport policies and certification requirements. Ensure all assistant coaches are also in compliance with requirements
  • Collaborate with the Board of Trustees on budgeting, fundraising, strategic goals, and club operations

Qualifications

  • Current USA Swimming Coach certification, including CPR, First Aid, and Safety Training for Swim Coaches
  • Minimum 3 years coaching experience (5+ years preferred), with a preference for head or senior coaching roles  
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills
  • Proven ability to lead a large, multi-level swim program
  • Knowledge of technique development, training plans, and long-term athlete development
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends and travel to out-of-community meets
  • Track record of coaching swimmers to advanced levels (LSC championships, Sectionals, Futures, etc.)
  • Experience with swim team management software (e.g., Team Unify, Hy-Tek) 
  • Willingness to relocate to Juneau, Alaska
