Torri Huske has pulled out of the 2024 Short Course World Championships after originally being named to the US roster in October.
Huske was one of 16 women originally named to the roster and was slated to swim the 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly. She is coming off of a huge summer where she captured Olympic gold in the women’s 100 fly along with silver in the 100 free. She also helped the US to numerous relay medals.
USA Swimming has told SwimSwam that a swimmer will not replace Huske on the roster, meaning only 15 women will represent the US. Instead, Gretchen Walsh will take Huske’s spot and swim the 100 free while Regan Smith will swim the 100 fly.
The redshirt junior returned to Stanford after taking an Olympic Redshirt all of last year’s NCAA season. She is currently competing at Stanford’s mid-season meet as the Cardinal are swimming in Texas. So far, she has posted a 1:52.89 in the 200 IM, 21.81 in the 50 free, 49.24 in the 100 fly, and a 53.90 in the 100 back. She is the top seed for tonight’s final in the 100 free after swimming a 47.39 this morning. Her 100 fly time was the closest to her personal best as her best time stands at a 48.96 from 2023 NCAAs.
Huske was not the only NCAA athlete scheduled to swim in Budapest. The women’s roster also features Phoebe Bacon (Wisconsin fifth year), Jillian Cox (Texas first-year), Kate Hurst (Texas first-year), Gretchen Walsh (Virginia senior), and Emma Weber (Virginia junior).
Based on the originally announced roster, the US has numerous options on who might swim the fly leg of the medley. Gretchen Walsh is most likely that answer as Regan Smith has the potential to swim the backstroke leg.
Stanford associate head coach Katie Robinson was named to the coaching staff at the end of October. Huske was the only swimmer from Stanford named to the US roster.
I feel that Huske is one of the most underrated swimmers in the country despite having been the most successful in the Olympics.
I know that Walsh is incredible in the short course, but my opinion is that Huske has a unique and incredible power to win. I think she would have won that 100 fly in Budapest

Bummed as a fan, love watching her race. Also bummed they aren’t naming a replacement. Lot of events and having the extra woman there for a bit more relay flexibility would be nice. More international experience for someone would be nice too.
My guess based on things she’s said in the past my guess is she is prioritizing the college workload a bit. Worlds is the 10th – 15th. The US team is likely there by the 3rd. Standford does quarters and their autumn quarter finals are Dec 9-13th so completely inside Worlds. I know athletes get extra leeway on scheduling finals but Stanford still has a reputation for being tough academically and Torri is not taking blow off classes.… Read more »

based on her time this weekend at the tennessee invite meet, through the converter that swimswam has, her converted time from scy to scm translates to a low 52. imagine how low this gets if shes tapered or once shes had practice in budapest
she will NOT swim low 52’s in the 100 fly at short course worlds. I would be very happy and impressed to see a 53 mid. That would be outstanding. Remember… 100y is not the same distance as 100 meters. Jus remember that Dressel did a 39.90 in yards and never swam under 45 in meters. or 42 in butterfly and broke the WR with 47.7 in meters… the last part os the 100 meters is where the swimmer really dies a slow down…that almost doesnt happen in yards.
Why is USA swimming not replacing her? There are many swimmers who can benefit from the experience. Curzan comes to mind.
The rules require that for each of Huske’s events, she can be replaced by the next available swimmer on the National Team for that event. For the 100 free it was Gretchen Walsh. For the 100 fly it was Regan Smith. Both those swimmers are currently on the team. If either refused the spot, it would go to the next available swimmer. For the 100 free that is Simone Manuel and for the 100 fly it is Claire Curzan. Neither of those swimmers are on the team.
