All Times During Men’s 200 Butterfly Final Faster Than In Tokyo (Day 5 Analysis)

The men’s 200 butterfly saw a whole final that was much faster this year than in Tokyo. Each time and its respective finish was faster here. In addition, the top six swimmers this year would have made the podium with their time if they swam that time in Tokyo.

No World Records had been broken so far this week until tonight, and night 5 paints a different picture that the pool might not be  “slow,” at least with the top swimmers from tonight. Four Olympic Records went down tonight, with Leon Marchand breaking the men’s 200 fly and 200 breast while Katie Ledecky broke her own record in the 1500 freestyle. In addition, Pan Zhanle of China set new World and Olympic Records in the men’s 100 free.

The biggest event that shows faster swims today is the men’s 200 fly, where as stated above, all 8 men were faster here than their respective places in Tokyo. The rest of events tonight though, lack the depth that the 200 butterfly had as far as improvement. Gold and silver were faster today in the men’s 200 breast than it took for both in Tokyo but 3rd-8th were all slower.

Pan’s record in the 100 free was also the only big stand out swim as tonight’s silver-winning time of a 47.48 from Kyle Chalmers would have missed the podium in Tokyo. Notably though, both the men’s and women’s 100 freestyle got faster by “last place finisher.”

Respect to the King. That double was crazy and he made it look easy. MVP thus far. Happy to see it in his own country.
