Sjostrom, Milak Among Confirmed Names For Monaco Leg of 2023 Mare Nostrum

A stacked list of names has been confirmed for the Monaco stop of the 2023 Mare Nostrum Swim Tour, the third and final leg of the European series that will take place May 20-21.

Reigning individual world champions Sarah Sjostrom, Kylie Masse, Kristof Milak, Thomas Ceccon and Nicolo Martinenghi have all been confirmed for the event, as have Tokyo Olympic gold medalists Maggie MacNeil and Lydia Jacoby.

MacNeil was among 24 Canadian swimmers confirmed to be attending the series earlier this month, though Masse was missing from the initial list. Another Canadian who wasn’t initially listed, Taylor Ruck, has also been entered in Monaco.

Although we don’t yet have a confirmed list of athletes for the first two stops in Canet and Barcelona, swimmers will typically attend all three stops of the series (or at least two). SwimSwam has reached out to Mare Nostrum for entries in Canet and Barcelona.

Some of the other prominent names on the entry list include American Michael Andrew, Australian Cate Campbell, South Africans Chad Le Clos and Lara Van Niekerk, and Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey.

Andrew has attended the series numerous times and finished fourth in the overall standings last year, while Canadian Ingrid Wilm, who won the 2022 women’s title, will also be in attendance. Van Niekerk and Jacoby were second and third last year for the women.

Note that the overall winner is the swimmer whose top FINA point-scoring swim from each stop has the highest combined total.

Campbell’s commitment to the series was learned last week, when she spoke at the Australian Championships and indicated she won’t race at this summer’s World Championships regardless of whether or not she qualifies.

One of the most intriguing battles on the docket will come in the men’s butterfly races, as Milak will face off with Japan’s Tomoru Honda, who was confirmed for the Monaco stop alongside countrymen Katsuhiro Matsumoto and Ippei Watanabe.

Milak and Honda went 1-2 in the men’s 200 fly at the Tokyo Olympics, and then finished 1-3 at the 2022 World Championships as Milak reset the world record. Honda has been on fire in the time since, including smashing the world record in the SCM 200 fly this past fall.
