The first outdoor FINA world swimming championship meet since the 2009 long course meet in the Foro Italico in Rome, Italy is reminding organizers of why outdoor meets are a dicey proposition.
With the start of racing less than a week away, forecasts call for rain and unseasonably-cool weather for most of the meet.

The meet will begin with rain and predicted highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s. But remember that prelims/finals swim meets, almost by design, miss the hottest part of the day. That means most of the first half of the meet will be raced in the 50s Fahrenheit (under 15 Celsius).
While rain is mitigated by the cover over the outdoor pool, wind could become a factor as well, especially early on, with gusts up to 20 mph (30 km/h) both bringing the potential for currents in the pool and uncomfortable conditions for athletes and spectators if rain is blown under the cover at an angle.
Average historical highs in Melbourne during the period of the meet are around 72 Fahrenheit (22 C).
On last week’s SwimSwam Podcast, three-time World Short Course Championship Tom Shields said that he felt like poor weather conditions at outdoor meets gave swimmers like him an advantage, because he was used to training outdoors in a cold, rainy environment in Northern California.
Well as we Aussie’s all know Melbourne and have 4 seasons in a few hrs lol
Kazan LC championship was outdoors also it was a stadium they put a large shade thing over the pool but still outside? I think that’s correct
I blame La Niña and the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai eruption
But it’s summer there🙄
Considering Melbourne’s record December high is 43C/110F they have really lucked out with the weather….Maybe they can just move to the (connected) indoor pool and have no spectators!
And the finals are at night….Melbourne’s record December low temperature is 4C/40F!
Shield also said it would be winter in Melbourne. Hilariously incorrect when I heard it but weather wise he could be right!
