The fourth prelims session features the men’s 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle and the 100 IM. For the women we’ve got the 50m backstroke, 200 freestyle, 100m butterfly and 200m IM. There’s also a mixed 4x50m freestyle relay at the end of the session. The 50m and 100m events feature heats, semifinals and finals, whereas the 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m events have just heats and finals. As a reminder, each nation can enter a maximum of 4 swimmers per individual event, but only the fastest 2 can progress after the prelims.

For a World Record, athletes will earn a bonus of €10,000 (about $11,000), with European Records earning them €5,000 (about $5,500). The European Swimming Federation will also offer €220,000 (about $245,000) as prize money for the 12 best performances in the Mens and Womens events respectively. The best sinlge-performance according to the FINA points table will receive €20,000.

This was a stacked Russian field this morning with Oleg Kostin setting the bar high in a time of 22.52 to see him qualify for the semis in top spot. His teammate, Aleksander Popkov, who won this event in 2017 (22.42) touched in a time of 22.77 to secure his place in the semifinal. Hungarian Szebasztian Szabo, who swam a 22.13 at the ISL European Derby in London less than two weeks ago, was quite a bit off the mark with his 22.93.

Winner of the 100m freestyle here in Glasgow Marius Kusch also progresses with 22.73. Because of the 2 swimmer per event rule, Russia’s Markov will not progress.

Uemitcan Gueres set a new Turkish record in 22.69. Although he did not progress, Aidan Carroll of Gibraltar swam a new National record of 25.81, his previous mark being 25.88. Daniel Zaitsev also set a new national record for Estonia with 22.77.

France’s Beryl Gastaldello leads the field in a new national record time of 26.00. Dutch record holder and winner of the 100m backstroke this week, Kira Toussaint, goes second behind her (26.04) ahead of tonight’s semifinal. Just behind her was 20-year-old Simona Kubova (CZE) with 26.60. Ireland’s Danielle Hill set an Irish Senior Record this morning with a time of 26.92. Her previous mark of 27.12 was set at BUCS last month.

Russian countrymates Vladislav Grinev and Vladimir Morozov touched in 46.16 and 46.46 respectively to move through to the semifinals.  Team GB’s Duncan Scott has been on top form as of late, and continued that today posting a 46.72 in the heats. He won bronze in this event in 2017 behind Italy’s Luca Dotto (absent) and Rio 2016 silver medalist Peter Timmers (BEL). Timmers also moves forward with 47.46 currently seeded in 12th place.

Four national records came out of these morning swims; Olt Kondirolli of Kosovo went 55.09, Teimuraz Kobakhidze of Georgia with 50.22, Austria’s Alexander Trampitsch with a new time of 47.68 and Denmark’s Mathias Zander Rysgaard (currently seeded 11th) with 47.37.

After winning gold in the 100m freestyle (51.49) here yesterday, Britain’s Freya Anderson will have to fight for another podium finish after her morning swim of 1.55.42, placing her 4th ahead of tonight’s final. Silver medalist from 2017 Femke Heemskerk leads the field with a time of 1.55.03. Just behind her is Czech swimmer Barbara Seemanova with 1.55.09.

World record holder in the LC 200m freestyle Frederica Pellegrini was also in action this morning  and progresses to tonight’s final with her 1.55.22. National record for Iceland’s Snaefriou Jorunnardottir with 1.58.89. There’s less than a second between all 8 finalists so tonight’s final will deifnitely be one to watch.

Italy’s Elena Di Liddo swam a very comfortable looking 56.46 this morning, giving her almost a second advantage over her competitors ahead of the semi. Anna Ntountounaki of Greece set a new national record in a time of 57.41, just 0.01 ahead of the previous mark of 57.42.

The gold and silver medalists in this event from 2017 are absent (Sarah Sjostrom and Marie Wattel) however bronze medalist, Emilie Beckmann is currently seeded in 3rd place after her 57.39 this morning. Silver medalist from the 200 at this meet Ilaria Bianchi heads into the final in 7th place.

Leader of the men’s 100IM field Andreas Vazaios (GRE) set a new national record with his 51.89. A strong swim from the Greek meant he shaved 0.8 of a second of his previous record of 52.67. Winner of this event in 2017, Marco Orsi,  finished 3rd out of the heats in a time of 52.43. Also is the top 3 mix if 2017 silver medalist Sergey Fesikov of Russia with his 52.10.

Duncan Scott set yet another Scottish record in this event, lowering his previous mark of 53.21 with his 52.49 ahead of tonight’s semi.

After racing the 100m butterfly a few events previous, Siobhan-Marie O’Connor positions herself ahead of the field with her 2.08.92 – the only swimmer sub 2.09. Italy’s Ilaria Cusinato, who won bronze in this event in 2017 heads into the final in 4th position.

Hungary go 3 and 5 with 3xIM event winner Katinka Hosszu (in 2017 she won the 100, 200 and 400IM) posting a 2.09.12. Her winning time in Copenhagen was 2.04.43, a full 4 seconds ahead of second place. Hosszu, as always, had a dense schedule this weekend but decided to not swim the 100m fly today to focus on the IM. An interesting final to come later on!

Poland and Russia tie for first place ahead of the final, both touching in 1.30.84. Although they didn’t make the cut, Austria set a new national record of 1.32.78, with the previous time being 1.33.14.

What happened in the last heat of the 50 back? No way was Gastaldello .8s slower than Toussaint.

The rankings however still show her way down the list at 26,84. Please correct that too, thanks.
