The final day of the 2018 Swim Open Stockholm saw a pair of national records fall in the men’s 800 freestyle, as Florian Wellbrock of Germany and Sweden’s Victor Johansson both were well under the existing marks to finish 1st and 2nd.
Wellbrock, who smashed the German 1500 record earlier in the competition, recorded a time of 7:46.85, knocking Christian Kubusch‘s 2010 mark of 7:49.12 off the books. Wellbrock’s previous best was a 7:50.89 from last year, and opened his 14:40 1500 in 7:53.65 on day 1. Johansson broke his own Swedish record by nearly three seconds, clocking 7:49.77 to best his 7:52.66 from the 2017 World Championships.
Sarah Sjostrom completed her perfect meet, going 4-for-4 in gold medals with a win in the 100 freestyle in a time of 52.77. That swim puts her #2 in the world behind only Australian Cate Campbell (52.37). Germany’s Annika Bruhn was 54.37 for 2nd, and Finland’s Mimosa Jallow capped off her impressive meet finishing 3rd in 55.56.
OTHER WINNERS
- Germany’s Philip Heintz won his speciality, the men’s 200 IM, in a time of 1:59.06. Great Britain’s Tim Shuttleworth was 2nd in 2:00.56.
- The German women continued their strong showing as well, as Franziska Hentke (2:07.90) and Sarah Kohler (8:24.67) had decisive wins in the 200 fly and 800 free respectively.
- Sophie Hansson of Sweden edged Germany’s Jessica Steiger (1:08.18) and Finland’s Jenna Laukkanen (1:08.48) in the women’s 100 breast in a time of 1:07.99.
- Belgian Pieter Timmers completed the sprint sweep by winning the 50 free in 22.25, just ahead of Swedish youngster Bjorn Seeliger (22.33).
- Belarusian Ilya Shymanovich (27.31) emerged with a win in the men’s 50 breast over Giedrius Titenis (27.39) and Fabian Schwingenschlogl (27.58).
