Rio 2016 Olympic Water Polo
The schedule for Monday’s matches at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games water polo tournament has been altered for Monday, August 14th.
The match between the favored Americans and the host Brazilians has been moved from 6:20PM local time to 2:10PM local time (5:20PM and 1:10PM U.S. East Coast time) on Monday.
The updated schedule for the quarterfinals:
- 14:10 15:30 BRA – USA Quarterfinal (match 16)
- 15:30 16:50 AUS – HUN Quarterfinal (match 13)
- 18:20 19:40 RUS – ESP Quarterfinal (match 14)
- 19:40 21:00 ITA – CHN Quarterfinal (match 15)
In women’s Olympic water polo, there are 8 teams and all 8 advance to the knockout stages. The opening rounds of play, which is divided into two pools, set up seeding for the win-and-advance stages.
By way of winning Group B in the pool play, the United States advance to “match 16” of the tournament, which is originally slotted to play at around 6:20 local time. However, it is common for these matches to be rearranged – usually for television purposes – and doesn’t impact competitors as much as it might in a sport like swimming or track & field, where regimented scheduling is vital.
Competition also shifts to the Olympic Aquatics Stadium now that swimming is completed. Competition had been in the outdoor Maria Lenk Aquatic Center through the preliminary rounds.
The Americans won all three matches in group play by an aggregate score of 34-14, while the Brazilians lost all three matches by an aggregate score of 33-13.
Isn’t the US only an hour behind…?
