Kevin Cordes Breaks 100 Breast American, U.S. Open Records in Semis

2016 U.S. OLYMPIC TRIALS

Kevin Cordes of Fox Valley took down the U.S. Open and American records today in the second semifinal of the men’s 100 breast, swimming the event in 58.94.

The previous American record was a 58.96 set by Eric Shanteau during the 2009 super-suit era FINA World Championships in Rome. The previous U.S. Open record was a 59.01 set by Mark Gangloff, also during the 2009 super-suit era.

Cordes split 27.58 on the first 50 and 31.36 on the second. His time tonight puts him second in the world this year. Only Great Britain’s world-record-holder Adam Peaty is ahead of him with 58.36.

Congratulations, hopefully he can throw down something even more stunning tomorrow night, and eventually in Rio. I wish him luck for tomorrow, his 200 breast and (presumptively) Rio. Anyone know if he’s going to Auburn to continue training with Sergio? It seemed like a great move for him to train with him.

his time with Sergio has been terrific. Would love to see him 58.6 in the final — and then throw down a monster 200 breast. WR is definite possibility

What other 200 breaststroker goes 58 in the 100 out of curiosity?

Someone is going to be extremely upset if Cordes throws down 200 WR at the trials.

No surprises here. Cordes has been 58.3/58.5 in relays the past two years. Chalk up a 26.7 for his 50 in Kazan and a 2:07.8 in the 200 from 2014 US Nationals, a 58 has definitely been Cordes’ territory. I’m eager to see how low he goes in finals and how fiercely he can challenge Van der Burgh and perhaps even Peaty.

I’m hugely excited for his 200 later this week.
