Today`s press conference of the Euro Meet Luxembourg 2016 presented Katinka Hosszu (Hungary), Marco Koch (Germany), Laszlo Cseh (Hungary), Velijmir Stejpanovic (Serbia), Raphael Stacchiotti and Laurent Carnol (both Luxembourg). The Euro meet takes place at the D’Coque Aquatic Center in Luxembourg, from January 29th to 31st.
Since the first edition of the meet in 1999, it has established itself as a top event and the meet always brings top-swimmers to Luxembourg and it is also a door opener for youngsters. The Euro Meet offers a professional setup with a 50 m, 10-lane competition pool and also a 50 m training pool as well as a 25 m warm-up pool. In addition, a bonus of €21,800 (about 23.500 USD) in prize money is offered. The Euro Meet is a qualifying event for the Olympic Games. The athletes who join the press conference won medals and titles at Olympic, World and European Championships. 112 clubs from 26 nations have entered their swimmers into the meet. On the three days, the audience will see 3.038 individual starts and 43 relays. A prize money of 21.800 Euros (23.700 USD) Euros will be paid.
The top swimmers confirmed that for them the Euro Meet always is a very special one. Marco Koch participated in Luxembourg eight times before and said: “It was my first international swim meet outside Germany and I stick to it.” All swimmers praise the perfect organization and the great atmosphere.
For Katinka Hosszu the Euro Meet is her third competition in 2016: “I’am really excited to be here and I have entered a lot of events and of course will try to do my best.” Laszlo Cseh, who turned 30 in December 2015, said that he hasn’t decided yet what events he will swim in Rio, maybe the 100 m and 200 m butterfly and the 200 m IM and perhaps a relay. He added that he swims the 400 IM at the Euro Meet: “That is a good training because it reminds me why I don’t like the 400 IM.” Both Katinka Hosszu and Laszlo Cseh confirmed that they will start at the European Championships 2016 in London because “A race is the best training.” The 30-year old said about his probably fourth Olympic experience that of course he now is more experienced and relaxed and can focus better on his races and preparations.
The Euro Meet starts today with the prelims of the women’s and men’s 200 m butterfly and the finals of the 400 m IM, 800 m and 1500 m freestyle.
