Iowa Boys Move to 16-Place Scoring for 2016 State Championship Meet

The 2015 IHSAA (Iowa) High School State Swimming & Diving Championship will for the first time score points down to 16 places in 2016, the organization has announced.

Both district and state championship meets will move to 16-place scoring, increasing from the previously-used 12-place scoring for the boys’ championship meet. Iowa is still unique in that the meet is a timed-final affair, rather than a prelims-finals competition, and that remains unchanged for 2016.

Iowa, where boys’ and girls’ athletics are organized by separate but cooperative organizations (another unusual arrangement), the girls already score to 16.

Below, we’ve rescored the 2015 State Championship meet. The big take is that the #2 and #3 teams at the meet would have flip-flopped, and 6 new teams that didn’t score previously would have scored. Overall, it would have resulted in quite a few changes in the final standings, though most of those changes would have only been by a single spot.

This year’s meet will be held on February 13th at 12:30PM at the Marshalltown Community YMCA.

IBHSAA needs to get this meet out of the dark ages. Prelim/Finals on one day.

Until they bring back a prelim/final format, nobody cares.
