Luke Smutny, who trains primarily with the AK Sharks in Miami, Florida, has signaled his intention to attend the University of Pittsburgh next year. Smutny is coming off a summer where he qualified for the US Open in the 200 butterfly, but he could also contribute to the Panthers in middle-distance freestyle:
- 200 freestyle- 1:40.51
- 500 freestyle- 4:35.02
- 100 butterfly- 50.39
- 200 butterfly- 1:48.28
Smutny recorded a 2:03.99 a the end of the long course season in the 200 fly to top it all off. His 200 butterfly would have placed him in the C-Final (scoring) at the 2015 ACC Championship, an event which Pitt returns just one scorer in. Pitt faces an uphill climb in their recently changed conference, they finished 10th out of 12 teams last year, besting Boston College and Miami (Diving Only. Smutny is the type of recruit that will help them improve their standing in the ACC.
I chose the University of Pittsburgh because of the amazing academics, coaches, and swim team. Once I met with the coaches and team I immediately knew it would be a perfect fit for me
Smutny made two finals at the 2015 Florida 1A State Championship, in both the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle. He has been home schooled but competes in high school swimming with a team of other home schooled student-athletes.
