USC’s nearly one year stranglehold on the top spot of the CWPA Top 25 poll has ended. Stanford takes over the #1 position after knocking off the then top-ranked Trojans 9-8 in overtime on Saturday.
The Cardinal (15-1, 3-0 MPSF) last held the #1 spot nearly one year ago, on April 11, 2018. USC assumed the top spot the following week (April 18, 2018) after downing Stanford 8-5 (April 13) and went on to win the national championship over the Cardinal (5-4) a month later (May 13).
Saturday’s loss was the first of the season for the Trojans, snapping a 37-match win streak and dropping the team to 20-1 on the season and 2-1 in MPSF play.
Elsewhere in the Top 10, UCLA kept its place at #3 with a 10-7 win over #7 Pacific. Hawaii moved up a spot to #4 after defeating then-#4 Cal 6-5 on Friday. The Bears took over the #5 position.
Last week’s #8 team, Arizona State, lost 9-7 to then-#19 San Jose State and #9 UC Santa Barbara succumbed to #11 UC Davis. Those losses dropped the Sun Devils to #10 and the Gauchos to #11. UC Irvine and UC Davis filled the openings in the top 10, each moving up two places to #8 and #9 respectively.
Princeton was the biggest mover of the week, climbing three spots from #18 to a tie for #15 after defeating then-#16 Wagner 11-10. The loss dropped the Seahawks two spots to #18.
After being ranked among the Top 25 all season, peaking at #13 in the preseason listing, Indiana (5-13) has dropped into the ranks of the vote getters.
Pomona-Pitzer (12-11) made its first appearance among the vote getters as well.
