The University of Massachusetts Amherst locked up another in-state recruit when they garnered a commitment from Trevor Gowdy. The YMCA of the North Shore swimmer specializes in breaststroke and IM and should be an immediate contributor for the Minutemen:
- 100 breaststroke- 58.86
- 200 breaststroke- 2:06.17
- 200 IM- 1:57.79
- 400 IM- 4:11.10
Gowdy swam on the St. John’s Prep Division 1 State Runner-up team, helping out with a top eight performance in the 100 breaststroke to go along with the breaststroke leg on the winning 200 medley relay (26.93). He also finished in the B-Final of the most recent YMCA Long Course Nationals in the 200 breaststroke. That time qualified him for the upcoming USA Swimming Winter Juniors.
“Watching the men’s team practice I instantly saw that tacit bond we call brotherhood. Coming from an all-boys prep school, (St. Johns Prep, Danvers, MA) I fully embrace and understand the importance of brotherhood. As well as the coach, Russ Yarworth, a fantastic man to say the least. He is outgoing, charismatic, and cares so much about each individual on the team”
The 200 breaststroke is the most likely scoring event for Gowdy in the Atlantic 10. It took 2:05.58 to make the top 16 at last year’s championship, a very reasonable time drop for an improving young swimmer. Gowdy would have been third on the Minutemen last year, however the two swimmers ahead of him have since finished their eligibility. UMass is the defending men’s Atlantic 10 Champions.
