The score line is a bit deceiving (Texas A&M over South Carolina 157 to 132) because the Aggies swam several swimmers as exhibition beginning with Event #17 (women’s 100 free). In fact, the Aggies shut the Gamecocks out of the top spot in every single swimming event.
The Texas A&M women swept the podium in the 100 back and 50 free before they began swimming events as exhibition. Senior Sarah Gibson showed her range, winning three events: the 1000 free (10:00.51), 100 fly (54.06) and 200 fly (2:00.33). Lisa Bratton also picked up two individual wins in the 100 back (55.00) and 500 free (4:57.47).
The Aggies have a lot of depth on their roster, and it was on full display at this meet. In addition to Gibson and Bratton, 7 other Aggie women won individual events: Bethany Galat in the 200 IM (2:00.94), Sydney Pickrem in the 200 breast (2:13.51), Laura Norman in the 200 back (2:00.00), Lexie Lupton in the 100 free (50.91), Kristin Malone in the 50 free (23.19), Franko Jonker in the 100 breast (1:01.58) and Claire Rasmus in the 200 free (1:48.67).
Diver Julia Vincent won both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards for the Gamecocks. South Carolina’s Emma Barksdale also had a strong meet, with third place finishes in the 200 free (1:49.31) and 200 IM (2:01.33), and a fifth place finish in the 200 breast (2:15.18). Those finishes include Texas A&M’s exhibition swimmers.
The Texas A&M men won the meet by a score of 176-118, and swam the final event (400 free relay) as exhibition.
The Aggies swept the podium in the 100 back, 200 back, 100 free and both diving events. Double individual winners included Brock Bonetti in the 100 (47.67) and 200 back (1:45.38), Luna Castillo in the 100 (54.31) and 200 breast (1:58.37), and Jacob Gonzales in the 50 (20.34) and 100 free (44.65).
The South Carolina men’s freestyle group looked strong, sweeping the 1000 free, and going 1-2 in the 200 and 500 free.
