Rylee Erisman Breaks Gretchen Walsh’s 100 Free National High School Record with 46.73

2025 FHSAA Swimming & Diving Championships – 4A

Only a junior, Rylee Erisman of Windermere High School broke Gretchen Walsh‘s five-year old National High School record with a 46.73 in the 100 free today at Florida’s 4A State Championships.

Walsh, who went on to break numerous records while swimming for the University of Virginia, had been the fastest high school competitor ever after going 46.98 at the 2020 Tennessee state championships.

Traditionally, organizations have tracked separate records for public and independent (private) schools. Walsh will retain the independent school record while Erisman will hold the public school record, having also gone under Abbey Weitzeil‘s mark of 47.09 from 2015. Functionally, though, Erisman’s swim is the fastest-ever in high school competition.

Splits Comparison:

Rylee Erisman Gretchen Walsh
New HS Best All-Time Old HS Best All-Time
50y 22.75 22.66
100y 23.98 24.32
Total Time 46.73 46.98

Erisman just-missed Weitzel’s 100 free public schools record at last year’s meet when she swam 47.14. Weitzel is a six-time Olympic medalist.

Despite setting a high school record, Erisman was actually just a bit off her best time, a 46.69 she swam at last year’s Junior Nationals while representing her club team, the Windermere Lakers. That time stands as the 15-16 National Age Group record. This summer, she followed up her yards record by also breaking the NAG record in the 100m freestyle, and collected eight medals at the Junior World Championships.

Erisman won all four events she contested today, helping Windermere to a runner-up finish behind Riverview Sarasota. First, Erisman anchored the 200 medley in 21.51, helping Windermere to a time of 1:38.96 to win the event by over four seconds. Next, she clocked a 21.67 in the 50 free, just off the 21.61 she swam last year to set the national public school record. After her individual 100 free, she closed out the day by once again anchoring a Windermere relay to victory. This time, she split 47.48 as Windermere won in 3:19.16, over six seconds ahead of Riverview Sarasota.

In spite of Erisman’s efforts, a very deep Riverview Sarasota team wound up winning the meet 395-305 over Erisman’s Windermere High.

While Erisman has not yet announced her college commitment, she took official visits to Texas, Tennessee,  Michigan, Cal, and Virginia.

Full recaps for the FHSAA State Championships will come soon.

Sub 53 again in US open

Who do you think that has better potential: Rylee or Audrey?

For sprint, Rylee.

For versatility, Audrey.

Think both will be on team USA for years! Definitely think they should be 1A and 1B in this class. Just so different but equally as impactful.

She’s shaping up to be a Ledecky-like prospect, but in the sprints. There’s a non zero chance she could be sub-46 before being a college student.

What’s scary is that it makes total sense, you almost can’t swim sub-53 LCM unless you have elite back half speed.

Tell that to Awsi Dooger who absolutely has NO belief in the importance of backhalf.

That’s a hilarious interpretation. I’ve been proven right time and again regarding the benefit of early speed. This sport has been overly cautious for decades. I guarantee if some of the retired greats could do their career over again the one change they would make is taking it out with less fear. Likewise with many elite coaches, who have clung to pathetic conventional wisdom.

But somehow the ones paranoid about my opinion summarize that I don’t care about backhalf. Yeah, I remember posting many times please stop and bang your head on the third wall.

In Rylee’s most recent Social Kick interview, she mentioned deciding on college in late October or November and specifically said she didn’t want wait until March to decide, but I do wonder if she is reconsidering that.

She and Audrey don’t have to worry about any school finding a spot for them regardless of when they decide, and when they graduate in 2027, they also need to decide whether to start college right away or delay college until after the Olympics.

Given that Virginia’s Instagram account is no longer following Rylee or Audrey, it seems to indicate that Virginia is out of the running, unless this is all a ploy to confuse SwimSwam commenters. Given her previous statement that she… Read more »

I really hope they take more time to decide. Feelings can change dramatically over the course of a year (let alone two). It might be useful to wait to see how their freshman friends fare this year before making their commitments. One way or another, I hope whatever choices they ultimately make work out for the best.

There’s nothing to check. Neither of them are following or being followed by UVA’s instagram

I suppose if you don’t count the coach.

I was wrong. Rylee follows Todd, but Todd does does not follow Rylee. Todd follows Audrey and Audrey follows Todd and UVA. But UVA doesn’t follow either swimmer.

I honestly don’t know what any of it means.

My take is Audrey is still in play but Rylee is not. Which makes sense as I think Braden talked about Cal being the front runner to get Erisman’s commitment (as do the people on this Cal forums I look at occasionally) and I haven’t heard anything concrete for Deriveaux so she’s probably still in play.

In this day of NIL, I don’t count out anything. Commitments and lots of other things have changed and will continue to do so especially at their level.

I mean. The Instagram thing does seem like a big indicator…but doing it just to tizzy up the fanbase also seems like something they would do.

@grok, do I dislike these social media games because I’m old and pedantic or are they just manufactured BS?

I would not be positive Rylee will wait for her class. Switching to a new coach going into an Olympic year feels too chaotic. She broke the record, there’s nothing left to do in high school. Virginia is out. Texas or Cal starting next year.

By then, Rylee might be the 100m freestyle world champion in Budapest in 2027?

With all the other commitments TN has had, it feels like she actually told them no, which allowed them to offer more to others etc.

Cal / Virginia (logically) make the most sense.

Excited to see what’s to come!

Think the only prospect that committed after Rylee’s visit was Busquets. The other five four had already committed.

The lady vols should first actually learn to swim fast at NCAAs before we start crowning them hypothetical champions.

The new revamped version of the Lady Vol Barefooted Coonskinned wearing fighting machine is poised to drop massive amount of time at NCAAs this year. With Coach K at the helm nobody can stop the momentum.

About Robert Gibbs

Robert didn't grow up swimming competitively, but as life takes random turns, he found himself coaching high school swimming, and absolutely loved it. He started following competitive swimming around the same time SwimSwam was launched, and as a commenter, Robert developed an uncanny knack for pointing out Braden's typos. One …
