Spanish junior Maria Daza dazzled on the third night of her country’s short course national championships. The 18-year-old Real Canoe star dropped a 1:54.45 to win her second national title of the meet.
For Daza, this time marks a nearly three-second personal best. Prior to today, her best stood at 1:57.19 which placed her 19th at last year’s Short Course World Championships. Today’s effort elevates Daza’s status, and it ranks her at #9 in the world this year.

Daza, who already won the 50 free national title yesterday, is sure to be a centerpiece of Spain’s relays at the 2025 Short Course European Championships in Lublin. She’s already got a strong track record of performing when it counts, highlighted by her two gold and two silver medals at Euro Juniors this summer.
Another highlight from the Barcelona pool today was the men’s 200 backstroke. The trio of Hugo Gonzalez, Diego Mira, and Ivan Martinez posted a Lublin-qualifying collection of 1:51s. Gonzalez chased down Mira in the final 50 to pull off a rare 200 breast/200 back national title duo, hitting 1:51.27. Mira picked up a second event for Lublin in 1:51.57. He previously qualified in the 400 IM. Martinez placed third with a 1:51.89 and officially punched his post-season ticket. For the latter two, it was their first time in 1:51 territory. The rest of the field finished five seconds behind this trio.
In the women’s 200 back, meanwhile, Carmen Weiler controlled the race with a 2:05.22 victory. This falls well off her 2:02.16 national record from 2024 Worlds that earned her a top 5 spot, but it was enough to cement the Real Canoe star onto the Euros roster.
Just like the women’s mile yesterday, the men’s mile was a thriller of a race. C.N. Dos Hermanas’ Cristobal Vargas and C.N. Santa Olaya’s Mario Mendez traded leads throughout the race, never further than .75 from each other. In the end, Vargas held Mendez off 14:46.15 to 14:46.26. Both men had already qualified for Lublin, where they will rematch alongside Europe’s best.
Tonight’s other two Lublin qualifications went to 200 freestylers Miguel Perez-Godoy and Cesar Castro. Both men toppled Perez-Godoy’s championship record of 1:43.63 from last year. Perez-Godoy posted a 1:43.24 for the pole position, while Castro clocked a 1:53.52.
