British teenager Amalie Smith bested her own 400 IM championship record with her 4:35.32 performance on the first night of the European Junior Championships.

This takes down her previous mark of 4:37.02 that she posted to win last year’s iteration of the meet. She was 15 years old then and 16 years of age now.

Tonight’s performance shows Smith’s remarkable consistency to produce elite times in the event. It just missed her own British age record of 4:35.18, which she picked up at the 2026 AP Race London in May. Prior to that, the record also belonged to Smith with her 4:35.46 effort from the 2026 Aquatics GB Championships. She has now been 4:35 at three consecutive championship meets, checking herself into #8 in the world rankings.
