2022 OSAA 6A, 5A, and 4A/3A/2A/1A Swimming Championships

4A/3A/2A/1A Recap:

The Sweet Home girls team won the 4A/3A/2A/1A state title with 87 points, which was 21 points ahead of second place Catlin Gabel with 66 points. En-route to winning the state title, Sweet Home brought home eight wins, which was highlighted by senior Chloe Tyler, a University of Central Illinois commit, who won four events (200 medley relay, 100 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay). 

Tyler broke the 4A/3A/2A/1A record in the 100 backstroke (56.49), winning the event by more than one-second. The previous record was owned by  Brianna Stadler of Baker (56.64) and was set in 2019. This is Tyler’s 2nd straight win in the 100 backstroke, as she won in 2020 (58.63). She also won the 100 freestyle (52.57). In 2020, Tyler was 3rd in the 100 freestyle (54.19). 

Catlin Gabel won the boys’ meet with 53 points, compared to 2nd place Newport with 39 points. Catlin Gabel was led by Akira Van De Groenendaal and Hodge Dauler, who each won two events. Van de Groenendaal, a junior, won the 100 backstroke (53.83), and was a member of the 400 freestyle relay, anchoring in the fastest split on his team (47.24). In 2020, Van de Groenendaal won the 200 IM (1:57.78) and was 2nd in the 100 backstroke (53.91). This year, he opted for the 200 freestyle, where he finished 2nd (1:42.58). With his time in the 200 IM from 2020, Van de Groenendaal would have finished 2nd this year. Dauler, a sophomore, was also part of this winning relay, posting a 48.61 split and also won the 500 freestyle (4:43.69). 

Asa Frisbee, a senior at Saint Mary’s High School broke the 4A/3A/2A/1A record in the 200 freestyle (1:41.71). The previous record (1:42.11) was from 2011 held by Kevin Waller of North Bend High School, who went on to swim for the University of Wyoming. In 2020, Frisbee placed 2nd in the 200 freestyle (1:47.07). Frisbee also won the 100 freestyle (46.34), which was one-second ahead of the field. 

5A Recap:

Churchill won the girls 5A state title with 60 points, compared to 2nd place Crescent Valley with 55 points. 

Churchill was led by Kelsey Wasikowski, a junior, who won the 100 breaststroke in a 5A record time (1:02.73), an All-America consideration time standard. The previous mark (1:03.04) was held by Abby Maoz of Wilsonville and was set in 2020. In 2020, Wasikowski won the 50 freestyle (24.68) and was 2nd in the 100 freestyle (53.89). 

Churchill’s winning 200 medley team included: Kylie Taylor (26.63), Wasikowski (29.29), Emily Ashton (28.91), and Lauren Larsen (25.00). The winning 400 freestyle relay featured: Larsen (53.84), Ashton (57.50), Taylor (52.89), and Wasikowski (52.42)

Also winning individual 5A titles for the Churchill girls: Larsen in the 200 freestyle (1:54.59), Taylor in the 200 IM (2:09.29) and 100 backstroke (56.67).  

Helena Jones, a junior at Wilsonville high school, won the 50 freestyle in a 5A record (22.96), which is an All-America time. The previous record was 23.26 seconds, and was set in 2010 by Kaila Lee of Willamette. Jones also won the 100 freestyle later in the meet (49.83). Her time in the 100 freestyle broke the 5A record in the event, which was also held by Lee, but set in 2009. Jones has verbally committed to swim for Georgia as part of their class of 2027.

On the boys side, Crescent Valley took home the boys 5A title. The team’s victories came from the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay. The 200 medley relay (1:42.51) featured Caz Mikula (26.91), Emerson Gatherum (29.64), Zakary Guenther (24.57) and Andrew Hanson (21.39). The winning 400 freestyle relay (3:13.78) included 

Habson (46.86), Guenther (49.31), Mikula (48.99), and Keller Evans (48.62). A  highlight for the team was taking 2nd and 3rd in the 200 freestyle with Hanson (1:44.16) and  Mikula (1:47.64).  

Marcus Gentry of Crater High School won the 200 IM in a 5A record (1:49.60), which is also an All-America Consideration time. The previous record was held by Carlos Hunnicutt of Springfield High School (1:50.81). Gentry demolished the 5A and OSAA records for the 100 backstroke with a time of 47.45 seconds, which is also an All America time. He won the event by nearly 5.5 seconds. The previous 5A record stood at 50.03 and was set by Brandon Deckard of Mountain View High School in 2014. The OSAA record was also set in 2014 by Patrick Mulcare of Southridge High School, which stood at 48.53 seconds. In 2020 he won the 200 freestyle (1:43.07).  Gentry will swim for Notre Dame beginning this fall

Also securing an All-America time standard in the 50 freestyle was Charley Page-Jones, a senior at Churchill High School, who won the event in 20.39 seconds. He also won the 100 butterfly later in the meet (47.63). His time in the 100 butterfly broke the 5A and overall OSAA record in the event. The 5A record was previously held by Case McEuen (49.19) of Lebanon High School, set in 2018. The overall OSSA record was set in 2018 by Van Mathias (47.90) of Beaverton High School. This was also an All-America time. Page-Jones was the defending champion in both of those events, posting a 21.18 to win the 50 free and 49.36 to win the 100 fly at this meet in 2020. Page-Jones will swim for the University of Nevada-Las Vegas beginning in fall 2022

In the boys 200 freestyle relay, West Albany broke the 5A record in the event. The winning lineup included Luke Milburn (21.42), Chase Barnes (22.40), Connor Dickerson (22.11), and Brock Nelson (22.30). Milburn, a senior, also won the 100 freestyle (46.37), which was nearly two-seconds ahead of the 2nd place finisher. He was also 2nd in the 50 freestyle earlier in the meet (21.25). In 2020, he was 2nd in the 100 freestyle (47.69) and 4th in the 50 freestyle (22.12)

6A Recap:

The Westview High School Girls won the 6A title with 94 points, compared to 2nd place Lake Oswego High School with 74.5 points. 

The Westview High School girls team posted an All-America consideration time in the 200 medley relay (1:45.51). The winning lineup included: Quinn Katayama-Stall (26.94), Elaine Lee (29.91), Fay Lustria (24.26), Stephanie Lee (24.29). 

The girls 200 IM was a fast race, led by Westview High School senior Lustria, who won with a time of 2:00.36 seconds, which is an All-America time. Lustria also won the 100 butterfly later in the meet (54.22), which was also an All-America time. In 2020, she also won the 100 butterfly (54.93) and was 2nd in the 200 IM (2:01.56). Lustria will swim for UCLA in the fall

Taking 2nd in the 200 IM was Lincoln High School senior Katherine Adams (2:01.03), who also posted an All-America time. Adams also won the 100 breaststroke (1:02.23) in an All-America time. In 2020, Adams was 3rd in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.00) and 4th in the 200 IM (2:04.75). Taking 3rd in an All-America consideration time was Lake Oswego High School Junior, Dylan Gustaff (2:03.61). Gustoff was 5th in this event as a freshman in 2020 (2:08.69).

The girls 100 backstroke was won by Hazel Derr, a junior at Jefferson High School (54.68), which was an All-America time. She was 3rd in this event in 2020 (56.03), and 7th in the 100 backstroke as a freshman in 2019 (56.88). Derr will swim and study at University of California Santa Barbara beginning in fall 2023. Taking 2nd in the 100 backstroke was Anna Raucholtz, a senior at Saint Mary’s High School who posted an All-America consideration time (55.24). West Linn High School sophomore Maeve DeYoung finished 3rd (55.88) in an All-America consideration time. 

En-route to Adams of Lincoln winning the 100 breaststroke in All America time (1:02.23), 2nd place finisher Kinley Wigle, a junior at Mountain View High School touched 2nd in an All-America consideration time (1:02.80). In 2020, she was 6th in the event (1:05.35).

On the boys side, Lake Oswego High School claimed the 6A title with 97.5 points, and taking 2nd was Jesuit with 72 points. Lake Oswego High School was propelled to victory by winning the 200 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay.

Lake Oswego High School got the meet started by winning the 200 medley relay (1:35.30) by a full second over 2nd place Lakeridge (1:35.30). The winning lineup featured: Jonathan Bell (24.71), Dohyun Kim (25.23), James Kang (24.51), Tylor Kim (20.85).

In the boys 200 freestyle relay, Lake Oswego High School posted a 6A and OSAA record en-route to winning the event (1:25.00) in an All-America time. The winning lineup included: Steven Peng (21.64), Lincoln Buckner (21.85), T. Kim (20.67), D. Kim (20.84). The previous 6A record (1:26.11) was set in 2019 by Newberg High School. The OSAA record was from 1998 and was set by McMinnville High School (1:26.08). 

The 200 IM on the boys side featured an All-America time from Jesuit High School junior Diego Nosak, who won the event in 1:48.79. He also posted an All-America time en-route to winning the 500 freestyle (4:28.20). Taking 2nd in the 200 IM was Lakeridge High School senior Andrew Huang (1:50.84), who posted an All-America consideration time. 

Huang, who was 2nd in the 200 IM earlier in the meet, won the 100 breaststroke in an All-American consideration time (56.56). Huang was 2nd in this event in 2020 (58.69). Huang will swim and study at Johns Hopkins University beginning in Fall 2022. Kim, who swam the breaststroke leg on Lake Oswego’s winning 200 medley relay, was 2nd in the 100 breaststroke (56.77) in an All-America consideration time.

Diggory Dillingham, a junior at Mountain View High School, posted an All-America consideration time in the 50 freestyle (20.78). He also won the 100 freestyle later in the meet (46.13). Quinland Gould, a junior at Nelson High School, won the boys 100 backstroke (48.93) in an All-America time.
