SANTA CRUZ, Ca. – The UC Santa Cruz women’s swim and dive team earned a 170-118 victory over Cal State Bakersfield on Friday afternoon. The Banana Slugs broke records left and right in the win as Taylor O’Malley and Paige Vicente reset the records in the 3m and 1m dive, respectively, earning 435.23 points and 434.10 points in the 11 dive competition. Katy Hawk set the program record in the 100 free with a time of 51.55 seconds while earning an NCAA B Cut time in the 200 free, touching the wall in 1:51.19. UC Santa Cruz will be back in action on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. as they celebrate senior day with a dual meet against Simpson.

In The Results:

  • 200 Medley Relay: The UCSC A team of Medha Raghuraman, Lily Wolfinger, Kirsten Boyle, and Katy Hawk started the day with a 1:46.45 effort to win the first event of the day.
  • 1650 Free: Piper Strickler was the top swimmer for UCSC in the mile, taking fourth overall with a time of 18:19.63.
  • 200 Free: Katy Hawk was the standout performer in the 200 free, recording an NCAA B Cut time of 1:51.19, dropping nearly two seconds off her seed time to win the event.
  • 100 Back: Siena Ancona came away with a second place finish, touching the wall in 58.76 seconds.
  • 100 Breast: UCSC went 1-2-3-4 in the 100 breast with Lily Wolfinger, Sadie BreenMaya Chan, and Jolie Mosack performing well overall. Wolfinger led the charge with a 1:05.43 for the victory.
  • 200 Fly: Kirsten Boyle and Maya Garcia-Hale went 2-3 in the 200 fly with times of 2:09.34 and 2:11.25.
  • 50 Free: Fiona Lei took second overall in the 50 free with a time of 24.43s with Phoebe Jaggers taking third in 24.51s.
  • 1m Dive: Paige Vicente took second with 250.58 points with Taylor O’Malley ad Briseis Valenzuela taking third and fourth with 227.48 and 223.88.
  • 100 Free: Katy Hawk continued to have a standout day, setting the program record in the 100 free with a time of 51.55 seconds to win her second individual event of the day.
  • 200 Back: Siena Ancona was the top swimmer for UCSC, taking second with a time of 2:06.99.
  • 200 Breast: Lily Wolfinger won the event with a 2:24.63 with Maya Chan following closely behind in second at 2:24.67.
  • 500 Free: Maya Garcia-Hale took third overall with a time of 5:12.9 with Paiten Tobey in fourth with a time of 5:14.79.
  • 100 Fly: Fiona Lei took second with a time of 58.86s with Siena Ancona also going sub 60 seconds to take third in 59.82s.
  • 3m Dive: Taylor O’Malley won the 3m dive with 244.05 points with Paige Vicente taking third with 225.08 points.
  • 200 IM: The Banana Slugs swept the 200 IM with Kirsten BoyleMaya Chan, and Lily Wolfinger touching the wall in the 2:09.93, 2:12.05, and 2:12.27 to go 1-2-3.
  • 400 Free Relay: The relay team of Katy HawkKeaton CanadayJadyn Chaffins, and Heather O’Brien combined for a time of 3:35.41 to end the day with another win for the Slugs.

The Banana Slugs had a strong day in the pool as Kent Nishida broke the program record in the 200 fly with a time of 1:49.84 while Massimo Reyna and Kyle Reitan dropped NCAA B Cut times in the 200 free and 50 free with Reyna going 1:38.98 while Reitan went 20.08. UC Santa Cruz will be back in action on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. as they celebrate senior day with a dual meet against Simpson.

  • 1650 Free: Dylan Blietz was UCSC’s top finisher, coming away with a second place time of 16:59.33.
  • 200 Free: Massimo Reyna was the standout swimmer in the 200 free, winning the event with an NCAA B Cut time of 1:38.98.
  • 100 Back: Greyson Davies took third place with a time of 50.70 seconds.
  • 100 Breast: The Slugs went 2-3-4 in the 100 breast with Sebastian Santiago leading the charge in second with a time of 55.84s while PJ Fortune and Jack West went 56.62s and 58.05s.
  • 200 Fly: Kent Nishida set the program record in the 200 fly, touching the wall in 1:49.84 to take second place overall.
  • 50 Free: Kyle Reitan had an electric day in the 50 free, dropping an NCAA B Cut time of 20.08s to take first with Andrew Koika taking second in 20.42s.
  • 1m Dive: Eoin Hempenstall took third place overall with 227.63 points.
  • 100 Free: Kyle Reitan and Massimo Reyna took second and third in the event, touching the wall in 45.03s and 45.32s.
  • 200 Back: Asher Kates took third place overall with a time of 1:53.38.
  • 200 Breast: Sebastian Santiago won the 200 breast, turning in a 2:02.32 with Jack West taking third in 2:08.76.
  • 500 Free: Dylan Blietz took third place with a time of 4:48.05.
  • 100 Fly: Andrew Koika took second overall with a time of 49.58s.
  • 3m Dive: Eoin Hempenstall turned in another third place performance, recording 208.35 points.
  • 200 IM: Jude Robinson and Sebastian Santiago took first and second, touching the wall in 1:54.18 and 1:54.72.
  • 400 Free Relay: Kyle ReitanAndrew KoikaBryson Schmid, and Massimo Reyna combined for a time of 3:01.57 to take second place overall.

  • The Roadrunner men defeated the Banana Slugs 163-137. Meanwhile, CSUB’s women fell to UCSC 170-118.
  • Men’s Highlights:
    • The diving duo of Alma Smith and Anderson Laing swept the top two spots on both boards, with both posting CSUB Top 5 all-time performances and NCAA Zones qualifying marks in each event.
    • Smith reset the CSUB record on the 1-meter board and now ranks #2 all-time on the 3-meter.
    • Laing now ranks third all-time on both boards.
    • Freshman Karsten Eichler won the 1650 Free.
    • Thomas Henstein and CJ Manuel went 1-2 in the 100 Back while Eichler and Henstein went took the top two spots in the 200 Back.
    • Reed Lucero won the 100 Breast.
    • Vili Sivec earned another triple, winning the 100 Fly, 200 Fly, and 100 Free.
    • Arthur Amaral Schneider and Tanner Sheffert finished 1-2 in the 500 Free.
    • The men’s 400 Free Relay team earned a victory.
  • Women’s Highlights: 
    • Mayu YagerEmmy Loftus, and Evelyn Silguero finished 1-2-3 in the mile.
    • Yager and Loftus also went 1-2 in the 500 Free.
    • Laerke Dann-Nielsen earned a double in the 100 & 200 Back.
    • Michelle Grabowski also earned a double in the 100 & 200 Fly.
    • Carolynn Kenney won the 50 Free.
    • Izzy Fay won the 1-meter diving board.
