MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine women’s swim and dive team will travel to East Los Angeles College to host the Pepperdine Winter Invite Friday through Sunday. This will be the last meet of 2019 for the Waves.
The teams in attendance will include; UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, CSU Bakersfield, California Baptist, Cal Poly, San Diego, Loyola Marymount, UC Santa Cruz, Alaska Fairbanks, Cal State East Bay, Azusa Pacific, Arizona Christian and Pepperdine.
MEET DETAILS: The meet will be a prelims and finals structure with prelims starting at 9 a.m. each day and finals at 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 4 p.m. on Sunday. Diving will be held in between the sessions on Friday and Saturday with a start time of 1 p.m. The meet will be hosted by Pepperdine at the East Los Angeles College Swim Stadium.
LAST SHOWING: The Waves had an outstanding last meet against LMU, dominating 12 of the 14 events for a 180-82 win over the Lions. The Waves got a meet going with a win in the women’s 400 medley relay, from Emily Morton, Anna Riekhof, Sarah Hamilton, and Jenna Sanchez with a time of 4:01.72. Nohea Lileikis took the first individual win for the Waves in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:55.40.
Caroline Eckel posted two individual wins in both the 100 and 200 backstroke with times of 58.13 and 2:09.76 respectively. Morton also earned two first place finishes for herself in the 200 breaststroke (2:25.66) and 200 IM (2:08.88). The 200 butterfly was owned by Caroline Anderson who received the win with a time of 2:10.29. Mackenzie Hamlett battled to first in the 500 freestyle, swimming a 5:10.75.
Sanchez earned her own individual win in the 50 freestyle, touching in a time of 24.93 and in the 100 freestyle Amy Griffin won with a time of 53.96. The final win on the day came in the 200 freestyle relay where the squad of Birlin, Griffin, Sanchez and Slater touched in a time of 1:39.83.
SPAHN: Head Coach Joe Spahn enters his second year as the head coach of Pepperdine women’s swimming and diving. During his first season as head coach, he led the Waves to a second-place finish at the PCSC Championships, took two swimmers to the CSCAA National Invitational Championships and set five school records.
NEXT UP: The Waves will be back in action January 8th, hosting Colorado State and New Mexico at home.
