According to a report in the Oakland Press, Liquid Lightning swimmer Kirstyn Abbasse has signed a NLI to swim at Oakland University. Abbasse is a middle-distance freestyler who should add depth to the Golden Grizzlies’ lineup:

  • 100 freestyle- 53.12
  • 200 freestyle- 1:53.49
  • 500 freestyle- 5:06.37

Abbasse finished in the top eight in both the 200 and 500 freestyle at the 2015 Michigan Division 1 State Championship for Lake Orion High School. Lake Orion is just minutes away from Oakland University’s campus in Rochester, Michigan.

But Abbasse has more than geography pulling her to the school. Both of her parents were varsity swimmers at Oakland in their day.

Abbasse’s times will make her an immediate scorer for Oakland in the 200 freestyle. She is also just outside of scoring in the 500 freestyle (5:06.20) for the defending Horizon League champions. It’s possible that she could also see action in the 1000 freestyle, as the Horizon League is one of the few conferences that offers that event.
