Head Swim Coach – Developmental Youth Swim Team

Location: Wellesley, MA

Position Type: Part-Time, Seasonal (Job to start August 2025; season runs October until early March)

Team Size: ~150 – 175 Swimmers, Ages 6-18

The Role:
WSA is looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated head coach who is passionate about working with young swimmers of all skill levels, while overseeing a team of assistant coaches. This part-time role is ideal for someone who loves the sport, enjoys working with kids, and is eager to create a fun and supportive environment while helping swimmers reach their personal goals. The head coach collaborates with the Board of Directors; the Board is responsible for parent volunteers and pool rental.

Qualifications:

  • A strong passion for coaching and working with young swimmers.
  • Previous experience in swim coaching or competitive swimming (experience with youth swim programs preferred).
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills to connect with swimmers and parents.
  • Ability to create a positive, encouraging, and structured learning environment.
  • Flexibility to coach during scheduled practice sessions 1-2 weekday evenings and 1-2 weekend afternoons, with Sunday meets during the season.
  • Experience with managing staff strongly preferred.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspire & Develop: Motivate and guide swimmers to improve technique, endurance, and confidence in a fun and structured environment.
  • Skill Progression: Design and implement age-appropriate training plans that focus on skill development, fitness, and personal growth.
  • Encourage Sportsmanship: Foster a positive team culture that values effort, teamwork, and respect for others, both in and out of the pool.
  • Practice & Meet Management: Plan, staff and oversee practices and competitions, ensuring a smooth and organized experience for swimmers and families.
  • Collaboration with WSA Board of Directors: The Board provides significant support by:
    • Meet Operations: Recruiting volunteers for essential meet roles, including timers, stats, bullpen, stroke and turn officials, and starters.
    • Communications: Sending out a weekly newsletter, “On Deck,” to inform parents about upcoming practices, meets, and important team updates.
    • Social Events: The Social Committee organizes and funds four major team events:
      • Coaches Social
      • Swim Team Mixer/Field Day
      • Champs Pep Rally
      • Season-End Awards Banquet
  • Communication: Maintain open and clear communication with swimmers, parents, coaching staff, and the Board to ensure alignment and transparency.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with assistant coaches to provide consistent and supportive coaching across all levels.
  • Strategic Planning: Participate in setting the meet schedule, conducting tryouts, and other preparatory activities as part of early season responsibilities.
  • Technical Proficiency: Generate team lineups prior to each meet using the Hytek Meet Manager computer system, import results into Team Manager, and disseminate them to participants. Familiarity with Hytek Meet Manager, Team Manager, and Colorado Timing System is required.

Season Duration:

  • Mid-October through the first weekend of March.
  • Preparatory responsibilities such as setting the meet schedule and conducting tryouts begin in August and September.
