Technical Director and Head Coach of Maldivian National Team

Introduction:

Maldives Aquatics is looking for a technical director and head coach for swimming, for our national team.  This is a rare opportunity to develop and strengthen a national team with access to a federation owned Olympic size pool (by mid-2026), and a 25-meter pool, while guiding the different teams and development programs from learn to swim to elite.

 

Basic Function

Planning and ensuring the proper functioning and practices of the national swimming team and the development program run by the Maldives Aquatics and be a mentor for Maldivian coaches working in daily trainings of national team swimmers.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coach and prepare the national team swimmers to represent Maldives in the regional and international level.
  • Coach and direct development level program run by the federation.
  • Mentor Maldivian swimming coaches.
  • Lead, mentor, and support assistant coaches.
  • Maintain professional, structured, and transparent communication with athletes.
  • Advice the Maldives Aquatics and develop ways to improve its programs in relation to coaches, swimmers and their training.
  • Create a coach’s school and an accreditation pathway from learn to swim to age group coach to elite coach.
  • Be at the forefront of the competitions and events organised by the Maldives Aquatics

 

Key Performance Indicators (KPIS)

Performance will be evaluated based on:

  • Athlete performance progression and international competitiveness
  • Delivery against training, competition, and readiness plans
  • Quality, clarity, and timeliness of reporting and communication
  • Athlete retention, engagement, welfare, and readiness indicators
  • Effectiveness of engagement with decentralised coaches and athlete integration outcomes.

 

Overview of the Responsibilities

  • 50% teaching, 25% coaching, 25% managing the development programme.
  • Flexible work hours – to be confirmed after discussing with swimmers and their schedule.
  • Hours outside of normal teaching and coaching required (morning, evenings and weekends)
  • Coaching all year round with the following breaks:
    • Weekend: Our weekend is Friday and Saturday. Unless otherwise there is a competition/tournament, all the Fridays are off for the coach.
    • Annual Leave/Season Break: Annually 30 days (Usually December, coincides with the annual school holidays).
  • Accompany Maldivian team to competitions, if the federation requests.

 

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Science, Physical Education, or related field (or equivalent)
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in elite or high-performance swimming coaching
  • Demonstrated experience preparing athletes for national and international competitions
  • Strong understanding of sport science, recovery, and athlete welfare
  • Proven ability to guide and mentor athletes and coaches in high-pressure environments
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills

 

Period:

  • Start on: March 2026 or by Agreement
  • 4 Year Contract (renewed every year)

 

Remuneration:

  • Monthly Salary (Negotiable)
  • Food Allowance.
  • Annual leave of 30 days.
  • Return tickets to home for the coach annually.
  • Accommodation provided: Studio apartment OR, if the coach decides to live with their family, a two-bedroom apartment with attached toilet to each room will be provided.
  • School fee arrangements for upto 2 kids in the Maldives.

Reports and Answerable to: the General Secretary of Maldives Aquatics.

 

Additional Requirements

  • Must be able to communicate in English and should be able to operate with the limited facilities currently established in Maldives.
  • Must have the motive of helping, aiding and lifting the level of Maldivian coaches by transferring the expert knowledge to them.
  • Must understand, respect and abide by the social rules and customs of Maldives, including abstaining from alcohol while in the islands and during competition trips.

 

Cultural Considerations:

  • Maldives is a Muslim country with limited access to alcohol – we don’t have bars and clubs in the capital city.
  • The coach needs to understand and follow the Maldives culture and norms, including adjusting the practice schedule and lifestyle to the month of Ramadan.
