Position Overview

The Head Coach/Program Director leads both the team’s athletic and business operations while reporting to the team’s Board of Directors.  Athletic duties include developing training programs, fostering a cohesive and positive environment for swimmers, managing staff, and ensuring the team’s financial and operational success. This position requires supervision of our three main developmental and age group coaches and other assistant coaches. The position also requires  developing and maintaining positive working relationships with members of the swimming community including athletes, parents, board members, and other coaches, officials, and partners. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills for conducting proactive communication with the swimming community in and around Spokane.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5+ years of Head Coach or Head Age Group coaching experience with a focus on stroke technique, race strategy, dryland/strength conditioning, and age-appropriate training for both developmental and elite swimmers with a program over 100 swimmers.
  • USA Swimming Head Coach certifications and SafeSport are in good standing
  • Associate’s degree or higher required
  • Current Lifeguard/CPR/AED/First Aid certifications
  • ASCA certification (Level 3+ preferred) or equivalent

Overview of Duties

  • Manage all levels of swimming programs at Spokane Waves from swim lessons through top competitive levels.
  • Cultivate a fun, positive, and competitive environment that motivates swimmers to exceed their goals, while also utilizing strong analytical skills to assess performance and develop tailored training plans, including competitive and practice sessions, to monitor individual progress.
  • Oversee training plans for all training groups.
  • Oversee seasonal progression of athletes and monitor phases of development with individual swimmers, taking into consideration cognitive, behavioral, and motor skill development.
  • Direct recruitment, hiring, supervision, and management of Spokane Waves lead and assistant coaches.
  • Establish and maintain consistent, timely communication with swimmers, parents, coaches, and Board members. Strong organizational and administrative skills, including excellent oral, interpersonal, public speaking, and written communication, are essential.
  • Attend monthly evening Board meetings, monthly coaches’ meetings, and additional operational meetings as necessary.
  • Oversee and forecast the annual budget, working closely with the Board President, Treasurer, Team Administrator, and Bookkeeper. This position is crucial for the club’s financial stability and includes jointly developing the annual budget with the Board.
  • Be knowledgeable with Team Unify, HY-TEK, Daktronics and Colorado Timing Systems, as well as Google Workspace, and Microsoft Office software.

Salary Info/Benefits

The Head Coach is a salaried position with benefits. Salary is based on experience and skills. Salary range: $55,000 – $70,000. Position includes accrued Paid Time Off and opportunities for continuing education through attendance at conferences, workshops, and clinics. Work schedule includes early morning, evenings, and Saturday morning practices. Will also include regular full weekend’s events/meets. Travel to regional and national meets will regularly require overnight stays and possibly air travel.
