COLLEGE BACKGROUND: The State University of New York Maritime College is an undergraduate and graduate institution focused on engineering, business, science, and maritime transportation. SUNY Maritime College was founded in 1874 and holds the distinction of being the first and largest maritime school in the United States. The College proudly supports twenty varsity sport teams represented by eight different athletic conferences. The College is located at historic Fort Schuyler in Throggs Neck, New York, just 14 miles from midtown Manhattan.

POSITION DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND COMPETENCIES:

 

The assistant coach provides administrative, instructional, and recruiting support services under the direction of the head coach and athletic director.

 

  • Assist in the implementation of the sport training and instructional program under the direction of the head coach by providing sport skill instruction, assisting in the conduct of practice sessions, performing game-related duties, and motivating players to give their best efforts
  • Assist in the implementation of the sport training and instructional program under the direction of the head coach by providing sport skill instruction, assist in the conduct of practice sessions, performing game-related duties, and motivating players to give their best efforts
  • Recruit prospective student-athletes effectively as assigned by and under the direction of the head coach
  • Serve as a liaison with academic support personnel in support of players’ academic efforts
  • Serve as a liaison with athletic training and strength and conditioning staff in support of conditioning conditioning and rehabilitation of players
  • Demonstrate a sincere interest in the personal and academic development, as well as athletic progress, of student-athletes
  • Exhibit good writing and speaking abilities
  • Exhibit supportive and cooperative behavior in pursuit of sport program goals set by the head coach
  • Efficiently and effectively complete all assignments provided by the head coach
  • Accept constructive criticism and demonstrate professional growth under the supervision of the head coach
  • Exhibit good judgment and professional behavior in advising and counseling student-athletes
  • Assist with the transportation of the student-athletes to competitions and events
  • Conform to the highest standards of professional conduct regarding compliance with department and institutional policies and procedures and adherence to the rules and regulation of athletic governance organizations of which the institution is a member
  • Contribute to the maintenance of good working relationships with all staff, student-athletes, and external constituents through (a) a positive and constructive approach to all tasks, (b) respect for the competencies of others, and (c) appropriate conflict resolution behavior
  • Assist in development of student-athletes through on deck coaching
  • Stroke review and meet preparation
  • Assist with meet management

 

Athletic Department/Campus Administrative Support:

 

  • Events, Scheduling, Facilities, Transportation, Student Employment, Admissions, Regiment
  • Fundraising activities
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings for full time employees
  • Completion of Campus Security Authority Training, HR Module Training, Van Driver Certification, NCAA Exam
  • All other duties assigned by the Athletic Director

 

Requirements:

 

Required Qualifications

 

  • Possess an Associate’s and/or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Demonstrated swimming coaching experience
  • Have knowledge of NCAA Division III rules
  • Excellent interpersonal, teaching and communication skills are essential
  • Ability to recruit student athletes, develop successful programs and maintain operations (budget, equipment ordering, NCAA eligibility, game management, etc.)
  • Possession of a valid Driver’s License. Must have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violation

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Have swimming and diving coaching experience at the intercollegiate level
  • Possess familiarity with hytek, team manager, meet manager and Colorado timing systems
  • Possess a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in physical education or related area.
  • Coaching certification from national agency of issuance
  • Exhibit prior experience with student-athlete recruitment or the evidence of potential for success in recruitment
  • Demonstrate evidence of ability to work well with college-age student-athletes and proven ability to perform administrative aspects of the program
  • Current Certification in First Aid, AED, and CPR

 

Additional Information:

 

Classification/Salary Range: This position is a college year (10 month) part-time UUP position. The anticipated salary for the position is $3,000 annually. Review of applications will commence immediately and conclude when position is filled.

 

Special Notes: FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.
