JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, the Assistant Swimming Coach assists the head coach in building the swimming program, developing student-athletes academically and athletically, and contributing to the mission of the University.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. The recruitment of student-athletes including athletic and personality assessment, daily correspondence, transcript and video review, logging all activities, on-campus visits, off-campus evaluations, and additional duties as assigned by the head coach.
  2. Instructs and mentors student-athletes in the sport of swimming and team building including dryland activities, team activities, weight training, in the water practice and skill development, at competitions, etc.
  3. Follows and conforms to NCAA, MAAC, NU athletics department and Niagara University rules and regulations.
  4. Maintain confidentiality of information (including but not limited to: student and employee personal information, student grades, etc.), both during and after their employment with the University. Any question regarding the confidentiality of material, should be referred to the supervisor. Any violation shall subject the employee to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
  5. Performs other duties as assigned by the head coach including social media, team travel, meals, gear, apparel, parent/family communication, alumni outreach, and additional duties as assigned by the head coach.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

  1. 33% Coaching and developing student-athletes.
  2. 33% Recruiting future student-athletes.
  3. 33% Operational duties as assigned by the head coach.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  1. Strong interpersonal, organizational, written and oral communication skills.
  2. Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
  3. Working knowledge of coaching and teaching techniques and the ability to effectively use them.
  4. Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays when necessary.
  5. Ability to receive telephone calls, respond to inquiries and communicate with others by telephone.
  6. Ability to travel when necessary.
  7. Knowledge of recruiting techniques and the ability to effectively use them.
  8. Proficiency to handle various office machines including but not limited to: computers, keyboard, software, copy machine, etc.
  9. Knowledge of academic eligibility rules.
  10. Ability to drive a personal or university vehicle for the purpose of university business.

ERGONOMIC REQUIREMENTS

The functions of the position usually performed standing, but may require some amount of time sitting, stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting, walking, running, carrying and other movements. Tasks involving working on a computer keyboard, computer software applications, involve extensive wrist and hand movement. This position requires traveling. All individuals are required to be able to perform these tasks without significant risk of injury to themselves or others.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

  1. Bachelor degree or high school diploma with outstanding high level amateur or professional playing and/or coaching experience required.
  2. At least one year of experience coaching swimming at the high school, college or higher competitive level or at least three years experience competing at the college level or higher.
  3. A valid driver’s license is required that satisfies both University and insurance company underwriting rules and regulations for driving a motor vehicle. Must also be able to operate a motor vehicle in Canada.
  4. In good standing with USA Swimming, Safe Sport, and the NCAA.
