Assistant Coach – Women’s Swimming

Under the supervision of the Head Coach, the purpose of this position is to use athletics as a tool to educate college students. By using inter-collegiate competition and all activities related to such competition, this position serves as a teacher and mentor to help build student character, prepare students for a constructive and effective life, and teach valuable life lessons including work ethic; discipline; resilience; persistence; teamwork and selflessness; goal-setting and goal achievement; overcoming adversity; and leadership. This position typically influences student-athletes for their entire four years at Harvard and plays a key role in shaping their personal development.

This position assists in planning, directing and coaching the women’s inter-collegiate swimming and diving program. Typically works with all student-athletes in the program. May supervise other Assistant Coaches and the operations coordinator.

This position plays a key leadership role for the women’s swimming program. Will fill in when the Head Coach is absent. Typically has a significant role as liaison with Athletics administrative departments. Requires experience coaching at the collegiate level or comparable experience, which may include coaching/teaching at the professional level. Particularly for sports that are more prominent on an international level than in the United States, comparable experience may include playing in a professional or other high-performance environment, such as for a national team or at the Olympic level.

This is a one-year term position renewable at the discretion of the Head Coach and the Athletics Director.

Job-Specific Responsibilities:

1.     Athlete Team Management

• Assists Head Coach in developing, coordinating, and planning practices and competition to develop student-athlete skills and helps team perform at competitive levels.
• Develops, coordinates and plans assigned portions of practices and game management consistent with Head Coach’s strategic vision.
• Analyzes video to scout opponents and develop strategies for team development.
• Executes a student-athlete talent recruitment plan and retention strategy consistent with values of excellence and inclusion.
• Effectively leads and communicates with students by generating enthusiasm for the team through credible coaching.
• Supports culture of education through athletics. Assists in academic integration with team.

2.      Operational Complexity

• Assists in the development and execution of team strategy, logistics and operational direction.
• Operates within budget.
• Maintains compliance with University, Ivy League, NCAA and other rules and regulations.
• Coordinates with less-experienced coaches in implementing objectives.
• Participates in professional development activities; follows trends and embraces innovation opportunities.

3.     Communication & Influence

• Assists Head Coach in maintaining and building viewership, and maintaining and creating positive media interest, consistent with the applicable sport.

Essential Functions:

• In addition, the Assistant Coach will be responsible for contributing ideas to a season plan for sprint, mid-distance and distance groups.

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent relevant experience required.
• Requires a combination of at least 5 years of swim coaching and/or swimming experience at the collegiate, national, and/or Olympic level.

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

• Master’s degree preferred
• Requires substantial mastery of sport-specific knowledge and relevant issues.
• Understands the philosophy, principles and policies of college athletics (including the University Conflict of Interest and Commitment policy).
• Requires moderate management and leadership knowledge.

About Burlingame Aquatic Club:

The Burlingame Aquatic Club, located in Burlingame, is a non-profit, public benefit organization that provides high quality aquatic programs for people of all ages. We operate out of the Burlingame Aquatic Center on the campus of Burlingame High School, and we work in conjunction with the City of Burlingame and its Parks & Recreation Department.

Job Overview:

Under the supervision of the Head Coach (HC) and Head Age Group Coach (HAGC), the Lead Age Group Coach (Lead Coach) is responsible for developing, organizing, and implementing a high quality training and education program to meet the needs of the assigned groups of the BAC Age Group Swim Team. Our goal is for our team to grow in quality and quantity as a competitive swim team within the Zone 1 North of Pacific Swimming and USA Swimming. The Lead Coach is the primary point of contact for the swimmers and parents in his/her assigned groups, and must ensure that a professional level program is offered at all times.

This is a full-time position with benefits. The successful full-time candidate will be expected to work a minimum of 34 hours per week.

Duties Include:

The Lead Coach will be the LEAD on:

• Maintaining a season plan for group(s) coached. This includes optimizing training, social events, incentive programs, etc.
• Communicating with group(s) coached. This will include a weekly email as well as any additional support emails that must be addressed over the course of the week.
• The qualified candidates are projected to work with competitive swim athletes ranging in age 9-12.
• Managing assigned pool space (lane set-up, covers). Please allow 15 minutes on the pool deck immediately before a scheduled practice and 15 minutes immediately following to assess your pool situation and to answer parent/swimmer questions.
• Educating swimmers and parents on team culture and competitive swimming etiquette.
• Maintaining good standing as a coach member of USA Swimming

The HC will require support from the Lead Coach on the following:

• Attend meets as assigned by HC or HAGC
• Fundraising efforts. This could be organizing a fundraiser with a local restaurant, our annual Lap-A-Thon, Silent Auction, etc.
• Technique Clinics
• Maintaining a proper work schedule under federal, state, and BAC employment guidelines
• Other administrative duties/responsibilities as assigned by the HC
• The Lead Coach is responsible for:
• The contents of the BAC Employee Handbook
• Logging daily attendance for swim group(s)
• Ensuring the safety of swimmers (staying with swimmers if we are closing)
• Logging hours daily in ADP app
• Attend weekly staff meetings

Hours and Location:

Hours for this position include approximately 22-25 hours of practice time per week as agreed to with the Coach, all at the Burlingame Aquatic Center or satellite pool locations, plus additional time spent preparing the facility for practices, meeting with coworkers, and responding to member inquiries. Some administrative work must be done on site at the aquatic facility, in addition to staff meetings. Practice hours may include morning practice sessions, early afternoon practice sessions as well as the possibility of evening practice sessions. A typical month will also include 1-2 weekend swim meets/competitions (An additional 8-20 hours each of these meet weekends).

Qualifications:

The Lead Coach must have a strong background in the sport of swimming (2+ years coaching with a USA Swimming club is preferred) and have the ability to effectively teach swimming to a wide range of athletes. He/she must be able to provide creative swim workouts that incorporate the technical needs of all swimmers, and also have a very positive on-deck demeanor. The Lead Coach must have professional communication skills and be able to effectively communicate with participants and families about any program changes or special events. The Lead Coach must be reliable, punctual, and approachable, and must be dedicated to sustaining a strong program that values all levels of athletes. He/she must be able to cooperate with all BAC staff members in an effort to support the overall mission of the club. A Bachelor’s Degree is preferred. Familiarity with club/team management software, including Hy-Tek Team Manager, Hy-Tek Meet Manager, Colorado Timing Systems, and the GoMotion App, is highly desirable.

The Lead Coach must hold a current nationally recognized Training Certification in CPR, First Aid, and Water Safety for Swim Coaches and is responsible for keeping those certifications current. Lifeguard certification is required within 3 months. Current coaching membership in USA Swimming is also required. BAC does reimburse for the cost of certification/membership upkeep.

The Lead Coach must be currently eligible to work in the United States. BAC is not in the position to endorse a work visa.

Salary: Pay is commensurate with experience and qualifications, in the range of $30-$34 per hour

The Assistant Coach or Associate Head Coach for Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving/Aquatics Operations Manager plays a significant leadership role in the administration and daily operation of the CMS Swimming and Diving program. The position is responsible for independently leading and overseeing designated aspects of the program, including but not limited to: planning and conducting team training sessions and practices; recruiting and evaluating prospective scholar-athletes; coordinating team travel and operational logistics; supporting scholar-athlete development and well-being; managing aquatics operations; and ensuring compliance with all applicable institutional, conference, and NCAA rules and regulations.

In collaboration with the Head Coach, the position exercises independent judgment and decision-making in the development, implementation, and management of program strategies, culture, and operations. The role may supervise assigned staff, student workers, or operational areas and is responsible for carrying out administrative and programmatic responsibilities essential to the success of the swimming and diving program.

Additionally, this position will collaborate with CMS Recreation to manage all aspects of Axelrood Pool facility operations, ensuring a safe, engaging, and well-managed environment for students, staff, and faculty.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Reporting to the Head Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Coach, the Assistant Coach or Associate Head Coach works both independently and collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:

Coaching

• Independently develop, implement, and oversee training plans, practice instruction, and competitive preparation for designated training groups and/or program areas in partnership with the Head Coach, while contributing to the overall strategic direction and performance development of the Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving program.
• Lead and manage designated administrative and operational aspects of the program, including but not limited to: timely completion of administrative processes and documentation; coordination of team travel logistics; development of practice plans; scholar-athlete and team culture development; aquatics operations; and collaboration with CMS Athletics staff in the areas of sports medicine, business operations, compliance, equipment, facilities, and event management. Exercise independent judgment in prioritizing and executing operational responsibilities essential to the success of the program.
• Play a leadership role in the recruitment and retention of academically and athletically qualified student-athletes for the highly selective liberal arts institutions of Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, and Scripps College, including identifying and evaluating prospects, cultivating relationships with prospective student-athletes and families, and guiding recruits through the admissions and enrollment process.
• Comply with all rules and guidelines set forth by the NCAA Division III, CMS Athletics, and the SCIAC (Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference), reporting any violations or concerns to the CMS Compliance Department.
• Remain in good standing of all required training and certifications, including but not limited to concussion management, mental health resources, and sexual violence prevention.
• Represent the CMS Athletic Department and the Swimming and Diving program in a positive manner within the SCIAC as well as regionally and nationally.

Aquatics Operations

• Recruit, certify, oversee, and schedule lifeguards to ensure optimal support for the Swimming and Diving, Water Polo, and CMS Recreation programs.
• Occasionally lifeguard the pool.
• Collaborate with CMS Recreation on Aquatics programming and scheduling.
• Monitor that the facility and equipment are operating correctly, working with the Internal Operations and Facilities Manager and Director of Athletic Facilities and Sport Operations to address any issues promptly.

Regular attendance is considered an essential job function; the inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude the employee from retaining employment.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS & SKILLS:

EDUCATION: A bachelor’s degree or any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is required.

EXPERIENCE: Previous collegiate participation and coaching are preferred. Experience in the recruitment of academically focused scholar-athletes is preferred.

LICENSES: A valid driver’s license is required to drive College-owned vehicles and the ability to be insured under the College’s authorized driver’s policy. National certification as a lifeguard and lifeguard instructor, and certification in CPR and first aid are required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: The individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.

• Deploy professional skills, in collaboration with colleagues, to best promote the College’s strategic interests.
• An evident understanding of the role of athletics in the liberal arts college environment is necessary along with proven experience in recruiting student-athletes to highly selective institutions.
