Under the supervision of the Head Coach, the purpose of this position is to use athletics as a tool to educate college students. This position assists in planning, directing and coaching the women’s inter-collegiate swimming and diving program. Typically works with all student-athletes in the program. May supervise other Assistant Coaches and the operations coordinator.

This position plays a key leadership role for the women’s swimming program. Will fill in when the Head Coach is absent. Typically has a significant role as liaison with Athletics administrative departments. Requires experience coaching at the collegiate level or comparable experience, which may include coaching/teaching at the professional level. Particularly for sports that are more prominent on an international level than in the United States, comparable experience may include playing in a professional or other high-performance environment, such as for a national team or at the Olympic level.

This is a one-year term position renewable at the discretion of the Head Coach and the Athletics Director.

Job-Specific Responsibilities:

1.     Athlete Team Management

  • Assists Head Coach in developing, coordinating, and planning practices and competition to develop student-athlete skills and helps team perform at competitive levels.
  • Develops, coordinates and plans assigned portions of practices and game management consistent with Head Coach’s strategic vision.
  • Analyzes video to scout opponents and develop strategies for team development.
  • Executes a student-athlete talent recruitment plan and retention strategy consistent with values of excellence and inclusion.
  • Effectively leads and communicates with students by generating enthusiasm for the team through credible coaching.

Hargrave Military Academy is looking for a Program Director (PD) to take this sport to the next level. As a PD, the goal is to build the entire program into a program of athletic excellence. The PD will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the aquatic facility, team scheduling, team practices, and oversee and support the middle school, junior varsity, and varsity programs. As Head Coach of the Elite Team, the responsibility is to provide challenging yet age/skill appropriate workouts to each individual athlete to ensure that the athlete can meet his full athletic potential, with the goal to see the athlete swim at a higher educational institution after graduating Hargrave. This is a full-time position with benefits. The successful full-time candidate will be expected to work a minimum of 34 hours per week.

Duties Include:

The Lead Coach will be the LEAD on:

  • Maintaining a season plan for group(s) coached. This includes optimizing training, social events, incentive programs, etc.
  • Communicating with group(s) coached. This will include a weekly email as well as any additional support emails that must be addressed over the course of the week.

Some administrative work must be done on site at the aquatic facility, in addition to staff meetings. Practice hours may include morning practice sessions, early afternoon practice sessions as well as the possibility of evening practice sessions. A typical month will also include 1-2 weekend swim meets/competitions (An additional 8-20 hours each of these meet weekends).

Qualifications:

The Lead Coach must have a strong background in the sport of swimming (2+ years coaching with a USA Swimming club is preferred) and have the ability to effectively teach swimming to a wide range of athletes. He/she must be able to provide creative swim workouts that incorporate the technical needs of all swimmers, and also have a very positive on-deck demeanor. The Lead Coach must have professional communication skills and be able to effectively communicate with participants and families about any program changes or special events. The Lead Coach must be reliable, punctual, and approachable, and must be dedicated to sustaining a strong program that values all levels of athletes. He/she must be able to cooperate with all BAC staff members in an effort to support the overall mission of the club. A Bachelor’s Degree is preferred. Familiarity with club/team management software, including Hy-Tek Team Manager, Hy-Tek Meet Manager, Colorado Timing Systems, and the GoMotion App, is highly desirable.

The Lead Coach must hold a current nationally recognized Training Certification in CPR, First Aid, and Water Safety for Swim Coaches and is responsible for keeping those certifications current. Coaching

  • Lead and manage designated administrative and operational aspects of the program, including but not limited to: timely completion of administrative processes and documentation; coordination of team travel logistics; development of practice plans; scholar-athlete and team culture development; aquatics operations; and collaboration with CMS Athletics staff in the areas of sports medicine, business operations, compliance, equipment, facilities, and event management. Exercise independent judgment in prioritizing and executing operational responsibilities essential to the success of the program.
  • Play a leadership role in the recruitment and retention of academically and athletically qualified student-athletes for the highly selective liberal arts institutions of Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, and Scripps College, including identifying and evaluating prospects, cultivating relationships with prospective student-athletes and families, and guiding recruits through the admissions and enrollment process.
  • Comply with all rules and guidelines set forth by the NCAA Division III, CMS Athletics, and the SCIAC (Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference), reporting any violations or concerns to the CMS Compliance Department.

The Department of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation is currently accepting applications for the full-time position of Assistant Coach for Men’s & Women’s Swimming.

The Assistant Coach will assist the head coach with all aspects of the program, including but not limited to: organization; administration; practice, training, and competition; travel; budget management; programming; alumni relations; recruiting; fundraising; and adherence to College, Department, Conference, and NCAA policies.

The Assistant Coach will also have other essential responsibilities within the Department, which will be assigned based on Departmental needs and/or candidate’s skills and experiences. Additional responsibilities may include serving in other roles—e.g. Facility management, teaching, etc.—as assigned by athletic administration.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Assist with all aspects of the program—including but not limited to: competition, practice, and team activities; travel; budget management; recruitment of student-athletes; fundraising; scheduling; etc.—as determined by Head Coach
  • Perform other essential Departmental duties as assigned by athletics administration
  • Foster and promote a healthy, inclusive program culture that prioritizes sportsmanship, integrity, the holistic development of student-athletes, and other core values
  • Adhere to rules, policies, and regulations of the Department, Swarthmore College, the Centennial Conference, and the NCAA
  • Assist with creating and executing recruitment strategies aimed at building a robust and competitive roster
  • Follow Departmental procedures in an effective and timely manner
  • Promote the mission and values of Swarthmore College and Swarthmore Athletics
  • Ensure all appropriate safety guidelines and standards are followed during practice, competition, travel, and all team activities
  • Support and collaborate with athletic administration, as well as support areas (e.g. Sports Medicine, Sports Performance, Athletic Communications, Equipment Room, etc.)
  • Demonstrate integrity and high ethical standards in all efforts, actions, and decisions
  • Become familiar with campus resources to support student-athletes’ holistic development
  • Support the missions, values, and rules of the NCAA, the Centennial Conference, Swarthmore College, and the Department, and satisfy all applicable rules and regulations.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Attend departmental meetings and trainings
  • Uphold College and Department policies and standards within the program
  • Serve on Department and College committees as needed/assigned
  • Assist Head Coach with coordinating community service initiatives, programming, and/or team bonding activities

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • May supervisor student workers, facility monitors, and/or lifeguards.

  • Ability to recruit with highly selective academic and athletic standards on a national level, instruct, and motivate student-athletes on sport fundamentals

What you bring:

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 1-3 years related experience coaching at the collegiate level, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of sport-specific fundamentals, techniques, and safety rules and regulations
  • Knowledge of intercollegiate sports, preferably at the Division III level
  • Ability to work independently and manage primary aspects of the program
  • Understanding of and adherence to NCAA Division III philosophy, policies, and procedures, as well as those of the Centennial Conference
  • Ability to communicate effectively with student-athletes, departmental colleagues, support staff, and various internal and external constituencies
  • Ability to recruit with highly selective academic and athletic standards on a national level, instruct, and motivate student-athletes on sport fundamentals

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications
  • 3+ years coaching experience at the collegiate level, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Familiarity and/or experience with recruiting within a highly selective academic setting
  • Knowledge of and competency with computers/technologies as needed (e.g. word processing, email)

The market range for this position is $50,000-$53,000 per year, which represents the College’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range at the time of posting. The salary offered is determined based on factors including, but not limited to, experience and education of the final selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.

This position may regularly interact with minors. Under Pennsylvania Child Protective Services Law, (23 Pa. Cons. Stat. §§6301, et seq.) employees who have direct contact with minors are required to obtain the following background clearances prior to the start of employment:

  • Pennsylvania Access to Criminal History (PATCH) through the Pennsylvania State Police
  • Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance (PACA) through the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services
  • FBI Criminal History Background Check (FBI Fingerprint).
