After setting a pair of continental records yesterday in the women’s 50 fly, Egypt’s Farida Osman set a third African mark in two days, posting a time of 24.78 in the women’s 50 free.
Osman’s clocking improves her previous record of 24.91, set at the 2016 Olympic Games, and qualifies her into the semi-finals in a tie for 9th. She’ll have a double tonight with both 50s, as she qualified 8th into the 50 fly final last night.
The 22-year-old wrapped up her college career at Cal this past March with a victory at the NCAA Championships in the 100 fly. That was her first-ever individual national title, among numerous relay victories.
Heading into the semis, Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom leads the pack by a wide margin in 24.08. 2016 Olympic champion Pernille Blume sits 2nd in 24.32, and 2012 gold medalist Ranomi Kromowidjojo is 3rd at 24.53. 8th place is currently 24.71, so Osman will probably need to drop about a tenth to secure a second straight finals berth tonight.
