Chantal Van Landeghem Smashes Own Canadian Record

Chantal Van Landeghem of Canada smashed her own Canadian record in the final of the women’s 50m freestyle en route to a fifth place finish in 24.39.

Van Landeghem bettered the 24.70 mark that she set at the 2015 Pan American Games at her home pool in Toronto just a few a few weeks ago.

Not only was it a Canadian record but it was Van Landeghem’s best individual international showing to date at a major competition.

After winning the 100m freestyle over American star Natalie Coughlin at the Pan American Games, Van Landeghem has been absolutely stellar.

She took home her first world championship medal of her career as a member of the mixed Canadian 4x100m freestyle relay that finished third.

Van Landeghem was just off her Canadian record in the 100m freestyle earlier in the meet despite throwing down some very solid freestyle splits on the relays. In the 100, Van Landeghem just missed out on qualifying for the finals by one one-hundredth of a second.

Putting up a 53.93, she finished ninth overall as Missy Franklin of the United States took the eighth seed in 52.92. That time for Van Landeghem was just one tenth off her best time and Canadian record of 53.83.
