In another historically fast prelims, Carson Foster obliterated his personal best to lead the field with a 3:33.79. With the swim, Foster is now the #2 performer all-time in the event, behind only NCAA Record holder Chase Kalisz. Foster jumped back over Arizona State’s Leon Marchand in the rankings with the swim.
Additionally, Cal’s Hugo Gonzalez redeemed himself after his 400 IM prelims performance last year. At last year’s NCAAs, Gonzalez fell into the B final, where he would then post the fastest time of the meet in finals. That won’t be the case this year, as Gonzalez cracked a new personal best this morning, speeding to a 3:34.88. With that swim, Gonzalez has now moved up to #4 all-time in the event.

Additionally, Foster’s swim was the 2nd-fastest performance of all-time as well. Gonzalez turned in the 5th-fastest time in the event ever. Moreover, Foster, Gonzalez, and Marchand now own 6 of the 10 fastest 400 IM performances in history, a stat which is all but certain to change even more in their favor tonight. Let’s do a brief split comparison. This chart shows the split breakdown between Chase Kalisz‘s NCAA Record, Foster and Gonzalez’s swims this morning, and Marchand’s 400 IM from Pac-12 finals a few weeks ago:

So one thing to look out for tonight: Leon Marchand clearly has closing speed. He was over a second faster than any of these guys on the freestyle 100 in his personal best performance. Gonzalez has the edge in breaststroke, it appears, so that’s another thing to keep an eye on tonight. Gonzalez was an Olympic finalist in the 100 back in Tokyo last summer, so it’s also possible he brings that split down tonight as well.
I hope Foster shut down the last 100. If not he’s liable to get run down again and miss out on an individual title and likely a record as well
With Foster’s history in the 400 IM, this is a bit like hoping that Michael Andrew “shuts down” the last 50 of his 200 IM.
That is exactly what will happen.
Hopefully Carson can get into the right mindset for the final and avoid being chased down like he has in other competitions. Marchand is the favorite, but Carson has made it seem like it’ll take a record to beat him. Gonzalez probably went hard in the prelims after his mishap last year.
Marchand went 1:37 last night and the 400 IM is his best event. Carson will break Kalisz record tonight but he does not stand a chance to Marchand
Once again, you’ve fallen into the trap of thinking Foster will make a decent drop from prelims to finals. Time and time again, we see that he isn’t that guy when the pressure is on. With all the evidence we have on Foster, he will not win tonight.
Phelps’ best time is from 06? Really?
Sounds about right. He never really cared for SCY (breaking a LCM WR at 15 does tend to have that effect), certainly didn’t taper for it. But pre-2008 he was a better in-season swimmer than after.

How’d he look? 3:33 seems… excessive… for prelims, at least on paper!
Strong, but like he was going for it. I imagine he felt good this morning and let it rip, so we’ll see how he adjusts for tonight when we know what Marchand, Finke, and Gonzalez can do on the back half
