Katie Ledecky on Racing in Westmont: “It’s good to try to push through things when you can”

2026 Pro Swim Series – Westmont

You wouldn’t know it by her casual 8:08 in the 800 Free last night, but Katie Ledecky has had a turbulent last couple of months since the Pro Swim in Austin. She traveled to North Dakota to celebrate her Grandmother’s 100th birthday, traveled back to Gainesville, then went back to North Dakota only a couple of weeks later when the same grandmother sadly passed away.

During all of this time, Ledecky was ‘training’ with her brother and 11-year-old cousin, writing them 2500-3000 yard workouts while she was swimming the 7000-8000 yard practices prescribed by coach Nesty. She came into Westmont a bit under the weather, but felt she could put up some good races regardless, and we’ve seen that already from her first swim of the meet.

8:08 might seem casual for the current Ledecky, but that’s another indicator of her GOATness and how incredibly in form she is despite her tenure. Reminder that she was 8:12 and 8:11 at the past two Olympics, and an 8:07 at trials in 2023 was the third fastest time ever and seemed incredible. But now I too am going “oh, just an 8:08, good in-season swim”. We definitely take her for granted

We really do. When she retires, literally who is medaling in women’s distance free in the US. We really need some more young talent to come through. There’s a good chance Katie is done after LA, then what

We’ll see how she adjusts to Cal. Shes also more of a 200-400 swimmer instead of 800/1500

Nobody expected madden to medal in the 800 in Paris. So we’ll see.

I would love to see the workouts she wrote! 👀

Crazy how she was still able to put up an 8:08 while not feeling at her best. I think she’s making the right call to drop the 400 IM and 200 Free, I can’t wait to see her mile.

North Dakota, not South Dakota!

We don’t deserve Ledecky.

8:08 is impressive at this time of the year regardless, but doing so while sick is extra wild. I hope she races 400 IM at some point later this year. Her PB comes from 2022 and she is in a much better shape now. In theory she could do something impressive with it.

If she does, she might at the Indianapolis pro series in June. It clashes with the 1500 in Sacramento

There is also Fort Lauderdale, unless she’s attempting an 800 WR again.
