Leon Marchand: “I would like to do some freestyle at a bigger stage”

2026 Pro Swim Series – Westmont

Video captured by Barry Revzin.

Although Leon Marchand is primarily competing in ‘off’ events this weekend, he is still topping the podium. After winning the 200 back and 200 breast last night, Marchand said he will be swimming the 100 breast, 200 free, and 400 free to finish the weekend.

We’ve seen Marchand compete in freestyle before, but never at a major international competition. Heading into the European Championships this summer, the 4x Olympic champ said he would like to compete in freestyle events on a bigger stage, perhaps setting up a foray into the 200 or 400 Free in Paris.

I can see him medaling in Back at Paris. Europe is stacked in freestyle though, 200 and 400 especially.

I don’t know if he’s got the raw freestyle speed to be competitive in the 200. But the 400…I think he’s got a shot to be a medalist. Hes got insane middle distance endurance and is probably the best front end pusher of any swimmer I’ve ever seen. I think if he works on it he could medal in the 400 simply by breaking the wills of a lot of the field in the first 150 of the race. But he’d have to be more controlled than what he did in the 500 never if he dies like he did in the last 75ish of that race in the long pool it’s gonna be rough.

I mean he split 1.44.3 LC I would argue that he has enough speed lol

That isn’t fast enough to beat Popovici or Hobson. Debatable whether he’d have the speed even for 3rd

Carson has split 1:43 and has never been a a serious factor on the world stage. 3×200 free is different than one and done relay split.

Martens goes out in 1:47 so it’ll be pretty hard to match that front end speed. Would argue he needs to rely on a more balanced strategy in the 400.

Has anyone ever medalled in all 5 disciplines at OLY/World level?

Leon has 3/5. Free is not out of the question. Back would be a struggle I think

That would be a heck of an achievement.

Just in LC, I can’t think of anyone off the top of my head who has 4/5 at Worlds/Olympics.

If we include SC Worlds, Manadou has medaled in every stroke 50 but never any IM. Hosszu has LC medals in Fly/Back/IM and a SC Worlds 200 Free medal. McIntosh is in a similar boat with Fly/Free/IM in LC and a SC Worlds 200 Back medal.

2014 SC Worlds Manadou. MMMH they won’t make em like that anymore

adding on to this, Douglass is probably the closest active swimmer to 4/5 LC, depending on 50 Fly scheduling, as she already has Free/Breast/IM medals and her season best 50 Fly last year would’ve medaled at Worlds but she missed the final due to semis being in the same session as the 200 Breast final.

I feel like he has a better chance in the 2bk than in free tbh

Maybe avoiding double 200 free/100br tomorrow to make a good 200 one, especially in perspective to to add it to his Euros schedule.
We’ll see.

What do you think Leon can go 2free now? 1:45 maybe?

Yes Absolutely.
In this meet, I don’t think so really but in french nationals in June-July if he races it, very likely.

He can absolutely do a 1:45. He split 1:44.3 in the 4X200 relay at 2025 Worlds

Is there any chance that him entering the 200 Free would prompt Popovici to focus on it more and take aim at the WR?

If Leon entered the 200 Free, it would certainly drive Popovici to a concentration on the 200 IM.
