Ekstrom Erases Two Junior Marks In Boras

There is nothing that could overshadow Sarah Sjostrom‘s unbelievable performance in the women’s 50 butterfly, but she was not the only athlete to have a record breaking evening.

18 year old Oscar Ekstrom set new Swedish junior records in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly on Saturday evening in Boras. Ekstrom posted a 22.94 in the men’s 50 freestyle setting a new junior mark and improving on his previous best time of 23.45. In the 100 butterfly Ekstrom touched in a new record time of 54.40, which was an improvement on his previous best of 54.78.

Ekstrom was also in the hunt for national championship gold in both events. The 50 freestyle was in a tight race between Ekstrom, Christoffer Carlsen, Stefan Nystrand and Alexander Nystrom. Carlsen won the event in a time of 22.90 followed by Ekstrom who finished just ahead of Nystrand (22.95) and Nystrom (22.96).

In the 100 butterfly Jesper Jonsson was able to hold off the fast charging Ekstrom in the final 50 meters to win the event in a time of 54.34. Alexander Linge and Jacob Thulin tied for the bronze both finishing in a time of 54.65.

Jennie Johansson completed her sweep of the breaststroke events by taking the 100 in a time of 1:07.54, finishing over three seconds ahead of her next closest competitor.

Swedish junior record holder Axel Pettersson and Kristian Kron had an exciting battle for the men’s 200 backstroke. Kron had over a half second lead on Pettersson at the 150 meter mark, but in the final 50 meters Pattersson caught and passed Kron to win the event in a time of 2:03.49. Kron finished second in a time of 2:03.63.

Louise Hansson took the women’s 400 freestyle in a time of 4:20.50 while Adam Paulsson won the men’s 800 freestyle in a time of 8:18.11.

In the final event of the evening, the women’s 4 x 100 medley relay, Sjostrom posted a 100 butterfly split of 55.73.

Jennie Johansson also 106.38 on the medley relay. With a couple years, Sweden could be putting together a formidable medley relay.
