Pleasanton Seahawks junior Luka Mijatovic was the star of the 2025 SC Senior Open last weekend, breaking three NAG records and winning five of his six events.
The last day of the meet was no different. He started the prelims session with a new NAG record in the 500 freestyle and followed that up with another record in the final, swimming 4:08.57 to drop under 4:10 for the first time.
He swam two other events on the last day. Right after the 500 free final, he raced in the 200 butterfly final, touching in 1:43.70 to drop about four seconds from his prelims swim of 1:47.32 and grab the win. He was just over a tenth off his lifetime best of 1:43.57 from the Pacific Swimming Far Western Championships in April of this year.
He ended the meet with a silver medal in the 100 backstroke, setting a new personal best 48.40 to touch more than a second behind Pleasanton teammate Tim Wu‘s 47.15 for the win.
Wu, who is committed to swim at Cal next fall, swam a new personal best in the event, dropping five hundredths from his previous best 47.20 from the CIF State Championship meet in May.
He also swam the 100 free, finishing 4th in 44.37 which was about half-a-second off his lifetime best of 43.86 from last December. In the 500 free prelims, he finished 2nd behind Mijatovic in 4:21.40, a best time, before scratching the final.
Quicksilver Swimming’s Nathan Foucu, a Stanford commit, won the 100 free in 43.73.
On the women’s side, Bend Swim Club’s Maddie Thornton, a Georgia commit, continued to build on her strong meet, finishing with the silver in the 100 free (50.10), and golds in the 100 breast (1:01.48) and 100 back (53.54). Her 100 breast was a new personal best time by more than three seconds, dropping from the 1:04.08 she swam in November of 2023.
Pleasanton 15-year-old Daniela Linares Danzos set a new personal best time in the 200 fly of 2:01.56 en route to her 3rd event win of the meet. She also picked up a silver in the 100 back (behind Thornton), and a 4th place in the 100 free.
Orinda Aquatics 16-year old Stella Canoles, who is currently a high school sophomore, won the 100 free in 49.50 as the only swimmer to break 50 in the event. This completed her sprint freestyle sweep as she won the 50 free earlier in the meet in 23.09.
