Siobhan Haughey Returns From Injury With Dominant Domestic Performances

The 2025 Hong Kong Age Group Long Course Championships took place over the weekend with 28-year-old Olympic multi-medalist Siobhan Haughey putting on a show across her events.

Haughey raced in the women’s 50m breast, 100m breast, 50m free and 100m free, notching victories in each to demonstrate her versatile prowess.

This competition marks the ace’s return to racing after suffering a back injury, which rendered her withdrawn from this year’s World Championships.

At the time, Haughey stated, “I have pulled out of the world championships in Singapore due to an ongoing back injury. I’m sad to miss out on the opportunity to compete against the best in the world, but right now I have to do what’s best for me.

“As elite athletes, we’re trained to push through the pain and fatigue to keep going. Yet at certain moments, the brave and hard thing to do is to take care of your body and wait patiently. Luckily I have an incredible team supporting me 🫶

“I can’t wait to be back racing at the world stage again. But in the meantime, I will be cheering for the Hong Kong team 🇭🇰and my friends from afar. Hope to see you all at the pool soon again🐼”

In her native Hong Kong, the former University of Michigan star logged a winning effort of 31.08 to dominate the women’s 50m breaststroke field by well over a second.

Runner-up status went to Hoi Kiu Lam who touched in 32.54 followed by Sze Ki Young who hit 34.09 as the bronze medalist.

The 100m breast race saw Haughey nab gold in a time of 1:08.00.

She opened in 32.04 and closed in 35.96 to top the podium handily. The next-closest competitor was represented by Lam who snagged the silver in 1:12.76 as Chan Tsz Ching bagged the bronze in 1:15.91.

Haughey’s lifetime bests in the breaststroke events remain at the 30.36 50m benchmark she notched first at the 2023 Asian Games and again at that year’s World Cup. Her 100m PB sits at 1:05.92 she established for bronze at last year’s World Championships.

The 50m free here saw Haughy stop the clock at 25.04 for gold and the 100m free saw her rip a solid outing of 53.48.

Haughey split 25.71/27.77 in the longer sprint to now rank #1 in the world on the season.

On the men’s side, 28-year-old Asian Games medalist Ian Ho posted a new national record en route to claiming gold in the 100m butterfly.

Ho split 24.52/28.84 to slice .02 off the former standard of 53.38 Ng Cheuk Yin nabbed four years ago.
