Regan Smith Swims New American Record With 1:57.91 200 Backstroke

2025 WORLD AQUATICS SWIMMING WORLD CUP – Westmont

Women’s 200m Backstroke – Final

Top 8 Finishers:

  1. Kaylee McKeown (AUS) – 1:57.87
  2. Regan Smith (USA) – 1:57.91
  3. Miranda Grana (CLB) – 2:01.96
  4. Phoebe Bacon (CLB) – 2:02.13
  5. Hannah Fredericks (AUS) – 2:03.11
  6. Anastasiya Shkurdai (NAA) – 2:04.72
  7. Madison Kryger (CAN) – 2:04.76
  8. Rhyan White (CLB) – 2:05.54

Regan Smith broke her own American Record in the women’s 200 backstroke as she touched 2nd in the women’s 200 backstroke on Sunday night. That broke her previous record of a 1:58.04 that she swam last December at the 2024 World Championships.

Regan Smith– Westmont
Regan Smith– Old WR/AR
50 28.03 27.76
100 29.82 29.83
150 30.06 30.24
200 30 30.21
Final Time 1:57.91 1:58.04

Smith was out a bit slower tonight on the first 100 but had a huge back half to get under the 1:58 mark for the first time in her career. This marked the 4th time she has been under the 2:00 mark in her career.

Now the former World Record holder, Smith just missed keeping that mark in her name by just 0.04 seconds as Australia’s Kaylee McKeown touched in a 1:57.87 for the win. Smith still holds the SCM World Records in the 50 back and 100 back, most notably tying her 100 back World Record last night in a 54.02.

Tonight’s swim was also a huge improvement from just a week ago as Smith swam to a 2:00.07 for 2nd (behind McKeown) last week in Carmel. She has a chance to get the record back next weekend in Toronto.

Her 200s look a lot better compared to this time last year, hopefully it can translate towards some drops in LCM

Nobody can deny…. The improvements she’s been making is a surge against Kaylee.

She improved every year since 2022.

She set faster 100 back than Kaylee before 2023 Worlds.

She set faster 100 back (which is also a new WR) before 2024 Paris.

She broke Kaylee’s LCM 100 back WR and SCM 100 and 200 back last year.

No – at the 2023 world trials mckeown swam a 57.50 and smith swam a 57.71 I recall. So mckeown had the fastest time before 2023 worlds, not smith.

To expand my previous comment,

Regan Smith has been making improvements in the past three years.

The problem is,

Her main competitors (Summer McIntosh in 200 fly, and Kaylee McKeown in 100/200 back) have not been sitting still, they have also been making improvements and they know how to execute it well when that matters.

The problem also is that the 200 Fly is early in the meet and 200 back is late in the meet lineups for Worlds and Olympics. That hurts her also. If 200 back and fly were switched, it would be a different story.

Then why couldn’t she beat Kaylee McKeown in 100 back in World Championship and Olympics since 2019?

100 back is her first event. She’s fresh as a daisy.

And yet Kaylee beat her in 2023 Fukuoka, 2024 Paris, and 2025 Singapore.

Excuses…. excuses.

Bob Bowman even changed Paris schedule to benefit Regan

Regan broke 100 back WR a month earlier.

Kaylee still beat Regan…again… in Olympics record.

And Kaylee McKeown raced in 200 IM in Paris, where heats and semis were on the same day as 200 back final.

And she beat Regan …again.

And Regan set a new Olympic record in Paris beating Kaylee. 200 IM is not as hard as 200 Fly physically and Kaylee only got a medal because Alex Walsh was disqualified. Regan got silver against McIntosh, and frankly her silver in 2021 should have been gold given the doping scandal.

And Regan set a new Olympic record in Paris beating Kaylee.

In women’s 4×100 medley LOL.

FUN FACT:

Kaylee McKeown FOUR Olympic backstroke gold, SIX World Championship backstroke gold

Regan Smith ZERO Olympic backstroke gold, TWO world championship backstroke gold

Again :

100 back is THE FIRST EVENT for Regan. Regan is FRESH AS A DAISY for 100 back.

Why couldn’t she beat Kaylee?

Funny you broke your own argument by saying Regan beat Kaylee in the 4×100 medley, which is the final day, which means fatigue affected her less than Kaylee lol.

Yes – we know. But we also know that Kaylee likely would not have been this dominant had Regan not lost the psychological edge because of the impact of the delayed Olympics. That is also true.

Pretty sure the Olympics was delayed for everyone, not just Regan.

Just to be clear – her time in the 4x 100 does count as a new Olympic record even if it doesn’t count in your head.

Sorry 200 IM is not as hard as 200 fly lol. This is hilarious.
And doping scandal?

You are just not right in the head.

Every time it’s an excuse or some reason why a result doesn’t count. Covid delay. The schedule isn’t fair. Psychological disadvantage.

Regan just swam in her home country, in short course where she was the WR holder, against an injured opponent who is in an unfavourable time zone, and still lost. The deck was stacked in her favour and she still didn’t win. And you’re blaming Covid and the worlds schedule somehow.

Just stop. It’s pathetic.

The Covid is only in reference to 2020/2021. And it is valid for that time period. Regan put on a great show at Westmont.

unstoppable… Dont mean to be picky after such a great swim, but didnt she get beaten. I would say wait for Kaylee to get her skills back up to where they should be.

And it means she is NOT unstoppable.

My grandmother keep making progress.

Using your logic, shes unstoppable.

You don’t even understand what unstoppable means

Unstoppable is not limited to world class swimmers.

This year Kaylee stopped Regan in Singapore, Carmel, Westmont.

It means Regan is NOT unstoppable.
