2025 World Junior Championships Psych Sheets: American Rylee Erisman Drops Backstroke Events

2025 World Junior Swimming Championships

  • August 19-24, 2025
  • Otopeni, Romania
  • LCM (50 meters)
  • Meet Central

The psych sheets for the 2025 World Junior Swimming Championships have been released by World Aquatics. The meet will run from August 19-24th in Otopeni, Romania.

The American team has seen a few event changes. Rylee Erisman was originally entered in five individual events, the 50, 100, and 200 freestyles and the 50 and 100 backstrokes. She has dropped both backstroke events from her schedule, and will now only be entered in freestyle races.

Julie Mishler, who was originally a relay only athlete, has taken Erisman’s place in both the 50 and 100 backstroke. She will be seeded 4th in the 50, where she will be the highest American seed, and 7th in the 100, with American Charlotte Crush coming in as the top seed.

Erisman is the top seed in the 50 and 100 freestyles and is the 2nd seed in the 200 free, just behind China’s Yang Peiqi.

Audrey Derivaux and Charlotte Crush will both be entered in five individual events, which is the same as the roster released by Team USA in June.

There were no changes on the men’s side of the roster, and Aiden Hammer, Gavin Keogh, and Gabe Nunziata will all be swimming three individual events.

Also entered in the meet are three World Junior Record Holders from Japan. Shin Ohashi, who recently broke both the men’s 100 and 200 breaststroke records, is entered in both events at World Juniors along with the 50 breaststroke. Yumeki Kojima, who holds the men’s 400 IM record, will swim the 200 IM, 400 IM, and 200 backstroke. Finally, Mizuki Hirai, who holds the women’s 100 fly WJR, will be swimming the 100 free, 50 fly, and 100 fly.

The other WJR holder in the meet is Kuzey Tuncelli from Turkey, who holds the long course and short course 1500 freestyle records. He will be swimming the 400, 800, and 1500 freestyle events.

Notably, China’s Yu Zidi will not be attending because she is too young to compete. Athletes must be born between 2007 and 2011 to be eligible and Yu was born in 2012.

Wonder why Tunisian Rami Rahmouni isn’t entered in this meet he would be in contention for multiple titles.

The mens 100 and 200 breast should be an exciting glimpse into a future rivalry for many years to come

I really hope swimmers like Luka Mijatovic and Sienna Toohey can swim at World Junior Championships. They competed at Worlds but to be honest I hardly noticed. They are not among the best in the world yet. It will be good for them to gain more experience of swimming finals and competing for medals, and also put up some good times at Junior level competitions.

I mean it would be good if they could. I know they will not.

I don’t think Sienna was prevented from going to Junior Worlds but I’m thinking she was probably advised to just focus on the one big meet.

Somehow I thought Toohey was going to juniors until I just looked at the list. Not sure how I missed that

She was on the original roster, but pulled out after getting selected to Senior Worlds.

She was replaced by Lily Koch when she made the senior team.

This could be a good meet to predict US swimming future success.

That would be a great story–from relay only swimmer, to individual gold medalist!

“Notably, China’s Yu Zidi will not be attending because she is too young to compete”

And she finished 4th in 3 individual events at 2025 World Championship lol.

It’s kind of ridiculous. Makes me wonder if WJs should have a qualifying standard like WCs, but then there may not be as many opportunities for young athletes from countries that aren’t swimming powerhouses.

seems Peacock is not televising the world juniors
checking the world aquatics website there is an option for “pay streaming”
but don’t understand the cost or registering

Everything changed once the Olympic Channel began to be phased out. In its heyday this event was covered not much differently than senior world championships. Peacock was never going to be the equivalent. And it’s even worse for winter sports. Those are all but gone on American television, other than figure skating — which women watch — and some skiing until Shiffrin is no longer competitive.

Here is the 2017 SwimSwam article:

There’s a 7 day option which would cover the whole meet. Costs $12.69 AUD on my end but would be in USD for you. If you choose this don’t pay for it until the day of the meet.

For free you should be able to watch Eurovision Sport via VPN if you have one.

Eurovision Sport is quite bad too so none of the available options are great.

As far as I remember from 2023, its interface was awful. Hopefully it’s improved. It was very hard to find the session that was currently “live”. Also they increased the price just before the meet started – just as everyone was about to pay (we all waited as you only get 7 days from the actual time of payment). I complained by email at the time.

It’s like $8 to stream the entire meet, it converts it to USD…
