Germany’s Anna Elendt broke her own National Record en route to gold in the women’s 100 breaststroke on Tuesday night. Elendt swam to a 1:05.19, knocking 0.39 seconds off her previous record of a 1:05.58 that she swam in April 2022 of the Pro Series stop in San Antonio, Texas.

Split Comparison:

2025 Worlds 2022 Pro Series
50 30.32 30.92
100 34.87 34.66
1:05.19 1:05.58

Elendt was out much faster today as she was 0.60 seconds faster on her first 50 today. She was able to hang on to swim under her record.

With her win, this marks the first gold medal for the German women since 2009 when Britta Steffan won the 50 and 100 freestyles at the Rome World Championships.

Elendt swam out of lane one to earn the win, swimming in the 1:05 range for just the 8th time in her career. Her win was a notable improvement from last summer’s Paris Olympics as she did not advance out of prelims, finishing 20th in a 1:07.00. She also did not advance out of prelims at the 2023 World Championships, finishing 19th.

Tang behaved like a carefree girl rather than a crestfallen swimmer in an after-race interview.
Pushing from the start prior to holding nerves home always is her predetermined tactics.
She will make a shot at gold in 50 breast afterwards.

I always love the win from outside lane

This race may not have been very fast, but it had lots of drama, from Tang dominating the first 50, to Douglas reeling Tang in, while the middle lanes were oblivious to the valiant effort by Elendt in lane 1.

I agree on your comments other than not very fast, look at all the world championship results post 2017 and this was one of the fastest if not the fastest final for top 4.

1:05.1 isn’t slow. King kinda spoiled us in her prime.
