For the first time in the history of European Aquatics, Poland has finished atop the medals table at a continental championship.
The country won five gold medals in three days of swimming, the same number as Germany, but emerged victorious thanks to four silvers (to just two for Germany).
Poland also tied Great Britain for the most total medals, though the Brits only won a pair of golds.
Poland matched its gold medal output from the inaugural edition in 2023 (where non-European nations could compete, but won special medals that were excluded from the European rankings). That gives Poland 10 total medals, which leads across the two meets so far.
In its second edition, and first as a truly-European affair, a pile of National Records were broken, showing the value of the meet that has seen a mixed-bag of attendance. A European Record also fell at the hands of Romanian David Popovici, when he swam 46.71 in the 100 free to rank 2nd all-time globally in that event.
Poland’s event winners were:
- Ksawery Masiuk, men’s 50 back – 24.82
- Krysztof Chmielewski, men’s 200 fly – 1:54.91
- Adela Piskorska, women’s 100 back – 1:00.01
- Justina Kozan, women’s 400 IM – 4:41.57
- Mixed 400 medley relay – 3:48.25
The country received a boost in the form of one gold and one bronze individually from Justina Kozan, who was in her first meet representing Poland internationally. American born, and raised, Kozan represented the United States at this meet in 2023, where she touched first in the 200 IM and was given the special ‘commemorative’ gold medal.
Kozan won the 400 IM and finished 3rd in the 200 free to contribute a pair to the Polish effort.
While she didn’t win any gold medals, Klaudia Tarasiewicz still left an impact with new Polish Records in both the 800 free (8:33.93) and 1500 free (16:26.58). The 1500 free was the oldest mark on the books
While the European U23 Championships are a relatively-new event, and don’t attract all of the best eligible swimmers from across the continent, European Aquatics does consider it to be an official European Championship event.
Poland’s previous best finish at a European swimming championship, as far as SwimSwam can tell, was 2nd at the 2005 European Short Course Swimming Championships.
