2025 European Junior Championships

Day 4 prelims of the 2025 European Junior Championships kicked off this morning in Šamorín. The action began with the women’s 100 free, where Spain’s Maria Daza clocked a 54.83 to secure the top seed for tonight’s semifinals. She put together a very well swum race, splitting 26.65 on the opening 50 then coming home in 28.18. This swim comes after Daza earned the silver medal in the 200 free back on Wednesday. Ireland’s Grace Davison was the 2nd-fastest swimmer of the morning, clocking a 55.35.

Next up was the men’s 400 IM, where Ukraine’s Anton Denysenko posted the top time of the morning with a 4:22.19. Desyenko was out in 59.16 on fly, then split 1:07.05 on back, followed by an impressive 1:16.35 on breast, then came home in 59.63 on free. He was just a tick faster than Spain’s Cristobal Vargas, who swam a 4:22.69 in the following heat.

Great Britain’s Edith Price clocked a 2:11.53 in prelims of the women’s 200 fly this morning, marking the top swim of the morning in what was a tight field. She came in just 0.02 seconds ahead of neutral athlete Serafima Fokina’s 2:11.55, which was swum in the 1st heat. While there’s still a semifinal to be swum in this event tonight, this final is shaping up to be a great race. Belgium’s Sarah Dumont was 2:12.58 in Price’s heat this morning, while Germany’s Alina Baievych and Leni von Bonin were both 2:12-point as well.

The relay of the day is the mixed 4×100 medley relay. In prelims this morning, Italy clocked the top time, seeing Ludovica di Maria (1:01.88), Gabriele Garzia (1:01.90), Nicola Furlani (53.12), and Alice Guarnieri (55.48) combine for a 3:52.38. Poland was the only team close to Italy this morning, swimming a 3:53.19 in the same heat as them. No other country got under 3:54 this morning.

The women’s 800 free prelims went off this morning as well, seeing neutral athlete Sofia Diakova lead the way with an 8:39.44. That swim earns Diakova the top seed for tomorrow night’s final by a few seconds, as Great Britain’s Amelie Blocksidge was 2nd with an 8:42.99. Diakova was pretty aggressive with her race this morning, splitting 4:14.82 on the opening 400m, which put her at 8:29 pace through the halfway mark. She wasn’t able to hold that front end speed, however, we won’t know until tomorrow whether that was a function of her going out too hard or just simply shutting it down on the back half as she was ahead of the field.

Germany’s Johannes Liebmann put up a very strong swim this morning in the men’s 800 free, clocking an 8:00.74. Liebmann was in the penultimate heat of the morning, however, the results for the final heat haven’t yet been published. Once they are, we will update with the results.
