Ukraine’s Nikita Sheremet Rips 22.20 50 Free at European Junior Championships Day 3 Prelims

2025 European Junior Championships

The 3rd day of the 2025 European Junior Championships is underway in Šamorín, Slovakia. This morning’s action kicked off with the women’s 200 backstroke, where Spain’s Estella Tonrath put on a show, ripping a 2:09.92. That performance gives Tonrath the top seed for tonight’s semifinal by a huge margin, as she was over 3 seconds faster than anyone else in the field this morning. Tonrath was strong out front this morning, splitting 1:02.99 on the opening 100. She already holds the Spanish Record in this event with her career best of 2:08.03, which she swam last month.

Spain’s Nahia Garrido was the 2nd-fastest swimmer of the morning, swimming a 2:13.10 in the heat before Tonrath. Of note, Spain’s Sara Costa de Vincente swam a 2:14.66, which was the 6th overall time this morning, but as she was Spain’s 3rd fastest swimmer, she will not advance to the semifinals.

The men’s 100 fly set up what should be a fun semifinals tonight. Neutral athlete Evgenii Shilovskii led the way, swimming a 53.00. In the heat following Shilovskii, Italy’s Francesco Ceolin clocked a 53.02, and in the heat prior to Shilovskii, Great Britain’s Dean Fearn posted a 53.05. The leaves our top 3 for tonight separated by just 0.05 seconds.

Moving past that, it didn’t stretch out too much. Turkey’s Arda Akkoyun was 4th this morning with a 53.24, while 5 other swimmers went under 54 seconds this morning.

In the men’s 200 back prelims this morning, Ireland’s John Shortt clocked a 1:59.41 to lead the way. He was out fast, splitting 27.49 on the opening 50m, then he split 30.90, 31.02, and 30.00 respectively the rest of the way. With that much speed out front, we’ll be looking to see how much faster he can go in the middle of the race as we move through the next two rounds. Shortt holds a personal best of 1:56.61.

Israel’s Aukan Goldin was under 2:00 this morning as well in the 200 back. Goldin swam a 1:59.90, coming in just off his entry time of 1:59.39.

Romania’s Daria Asaftei led the way in the women’s 200 breast, swimming a 2:28.34 this morning. She put together a strong race this morning, splitting 1:11.63 on the opening 100m, then coming home in 1:16.71. There were 5 other swimmers who went under 2:30 this morning, setting up a deep field for tonight’s semifinals.

The men’s 50 free prelims saw Ukraine’s Nikita Sheremet put up a very impressive 22.20 to lead the way. That performance blew away Sheremet’s seed time of 22.46, setting him up with some great momentum as we head into the semifinals tonight. Serbias’s Justin Cvetkov was 2nd this morning with a 22.54, while Lithuania’s Tajus Juska came in 3rd with a 22.55.

Great Britain’s Filip Nowacki had a great swim in the men’s 200 breast this morning, leading the field with a speedy 2:10.74. He was out pretty fast this morning, splitting 1:02.78 on the opening 100, then coming home in 1:07.96 on the back half. Italy’s Michele Longobardo was also very impressive this morning, taking 2nd overall with a 2:11.13. Neutral athlete Daniil Pisetskii also went 2:11, coming in 3rd overall with a 2:11.87.
