SIU Women Dominate McKendree, Bearcat Men Take Down Salukis

CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois swimming and diving team finished with a split on Friday against McKendree. The women’s team sailed past the Bearcats with a score of 217-81 while the men’s team finished with a score of  160.5-137.5.

“We knew we’d have a tough test against McKendree and they came ready to race. For the first meet of the year we did a lot of good things, but there is also a lot to improve on” head coach Geoff Hanson said.

Key Saluki performances Friday include nineteen first place finishes for the Salukis across all events. On the women’s side Celia Pulido , Olivia Herron ,Jasmine Rau  and Masha Zhukova opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, finishing with a time of 1:44.34. Celia Pulido also had a first place finish in the 100 backstroke, where she currently holds the school and pool record.

On the men’s side Alex Santiago Alex Cimera , Nicolas Lanuza  and Donat Csuvarszki  finished first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:21.55. Alex Cimera also had a first place finish  in the 100 freestyle with a time of 44.93. Donat Csuvarszki finished first in the 50 freestyle as well with a time of 20.43.

On the diving side Farida Moussa  claimed victory in the women’s 1-meter dive with a score of 243.98. Lee Haywood won big for the men’s 1-meter dive with a score of 307.35. Moussa and Haywood were also the winners for the 3-meter dive.

 “We’ve got a lot of potential with this team I believe. This was the first of many challenges we’ll face before championship season in February and March” said Hanson

The Salukis are on the road for the next three meets starting at Missouri State. The swimming and diving team will be at home again on Friday, Nov. 9 when they host the A3 Invitational.

CARBONDALE, Ill. – McKendree University men’s swimming and diving competed in its first meet of the year at Southern Illinois University on Oct. 6. The Bearcats defeated the Division I Salukis 160.5-137.5. The Bearcats will host Saint Louis University and Drury University this coming weekend Oct. 13-14 at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex.

Against SIU, McKendree came away with nine first-place finishes, seven runners-up, and 11 third-place performances.

Junior Jackson Lustig led the Bearcats with three victories on the day in the 200 butterfly (1:47.21), 100 butterfly (48.76), and 200 individual medley (1:54.88). Freshman Christian Davidson swept the freestyle distance events, taking first in the 1000 freestyle (9:31.07) and the 500 freestyle (4:38.14) in his collegiate debut. Senior Filipe Pinheiro captured wins in the 100 (56.32) and 200 breaststroke (2:06.02) events while freshman Come Jaegle rounded out the first-place performances in the 200 freestyle (1:39.90).

McKendree took second place in seven events including two relays – the 200 medley relay featuring junior Patryk Rozenek, Pinheiro, Lustig, and sophomore Mario Perez Torrado (1:31.38) and the 200 freestyle relay comprised of senior Caleb Law, Rozenek, freshman Patrick Cramer, and freshman Tyson Upton (1:23.08). Individually, five different Bearcats touched in second place: Rozenek in the 100 backstroke (51.04), sophomore Noah Tague in the 200 breaststroke (1:53.24), sophomore Preston Troyer in the 500 freestyle (4:42.84), Law in the 50 freestyle (20.85), and Jaegle in the 100 freestyle (46.10).

The Bearcats finished third in 11 events, beginning with the 200 medley relay team of senior DaVante Carey, Law, junior Alireza Yavari, and Upton (1:31.44) as well as the 200 freestyle relay of Jaegle, junior Leo Gandaria-Hernandez, junior Arthur Souza, and Carey (1:24.02). Junior Ethan Hanson finished third in both breaststroke events with a time of 59.00 in the 100 breaststroke and 2:09.88 in the 200 breaststroke. Yavari and sophomore Caden Brooks each captured two third-place finishes as Yavari competed in the 200 freestyle (1:41.45) and 200 individual medley (1:57.57) and Brooks swam in the 100 (51.33) and 200 (1:53.24) backstroke events. In the butterfly events, sophomore Joey Ovanic took third in the 100 butterfly (50.63) while freshman Archie Minto was the second runner-up in the 200 butterfly (1:50.50). Rounding out the third-placers was senior Chance Conde in the 1000 freestyle (9:51.39).
