Loyola Opens Season With Sweep Of Lehigh

BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland’s swimming and diving teams had a banner day of competition to open their 2023-24 schedule on Saturday, sweeping Lehigh University.

The women picked up their first-ever dual-meet win over the Mountain Hawks with a 176-124 victory, while the men won all 16 events to score a 252-44 decision.

Loyola won all four relay events and 22 individual races in the Patriot League meet at the Mangione Pool at the Fitness & Aquatic Center. Lily Mead took three individual titles, and six others won two races each. The men’s team swept the first three spots in 13 of 16 races.

Relay Dominance

  • Loyola got out of the gates with a hot start in both the men’s and women’s team events, taking the top two spots in both 200 medley relays.
  • Mead had the fastest 50 backstroke time by 1.39 seconds to give the women an early lead, and Avery Stimmel, Michaela Schultz and Charley Tulio brought home the victory with a time of 1:44.64.
  • The women’s team of Kelly BruenPaige SimkoLaura Latham and Fay Moser took second in 1:46.77.
  • Joe Hayburn led off the men’s medley with a 50 backstroke time of 23.29 to five the Greyhounds a lead of more than 0.2 seconds, and Max Verheyen stretched the advantage to over a second with a swim of 50 breastroke time of 22.00. Hans van Lierop and Caleb Kelly continued to stretch the lead en route to a win in 1:30.14.
  • Tyler KnurekMichael GozdanCameron Shinnick and Liam Schindler cruised to a time of 1:32.01 for second in the race.
  • The meet ended like it started with Loyola dominating the 200 freestyle relays.
  • Haley Robinson, Schultz, Moser and Tuliio won the women’s race by over two seconds, touching the wall in 1:36.09. Stimmel, Katie O’Connor, Latham and Bruen were second in 1:38.15.
  • On the men’s side, brothers Joe and Patrick Hayburn took the first two legs of the race, and Henry Muller and Kelly closed it with a time of 1:22.66 for the win.
  • Knurek, van Lierop, Joey Zellner and Schindler swam 1:25.24 to finish second.

Mead Wins Three

  • Mead with a triple winner for the Greyhounds, taking first in the 200 freestyle, 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley.
  • She had a swim of 1:52.72 in the freestyle race to win by 1.07 seconds over Lehigh’s Mairin Ludwig. Schultz took third in the race (1:53.79), and O’Brien was fourth (1:57.89).
  • Mead captured first in the backstroke with a dominant performance, coming in with a time of 2:02.62 for a nearly four-second victory. Lauren Lane took second for the Greyhounds in 2:6.34, and Grace Dwyer was fourth (2:09.22).
  • The Loyola senior finished her day with a victory in the IM, holding off Ludwig’s time of 2:09.73 with a victory in 2:09.20.

Double Winners For The Men

  • Five Loyola men won two races each on Saturday: Kelly (50 and 100 freestyle), Joe Hayburn (100 and 200 backstroke), Gozdan (100 and 200 breaststroke), Matt Gray (500 and 1,000 freestyle) and Sam Hersick (1- and 3-meter diving).
  • Kelly swam 20.42 in the 50 freestyle to lead a first-through-fourth finish in the event. Patrick Hayburn finished second (21.04), while Schindler (21.19) and van Lierop were third and fourth, respectively in 21.19 and 21.59.
  • Kelly then won the 100 freestyle in 45.40, while Patrick Hayburn was second in 46.19 and Knurek third in 46.60.
  • Gozdan led the Greyhounds to a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 breaststroke, winning in 2:05.33. Zach Eisenmann (2:07.28) and Michael Venit (2:09.36) were next to the wall in the race.
  • The trio did the same in the 100 breakstroke with Gozdan winning in 55.72, Eisenmann taking second in 57.18 and Venit third in 57.66.
  • Joe Hayburn made his collegiate debut with a pair of victories, winning both backstroke races.
  • He took the top spot in the 100 back in 50.04 with Knurek taking second in 51.88. Hayburn won the 200 back in 1:49.80, while Henry Mueller was second in 1:51.23.
  • Gray earned his victories in the distance freestyle races, leading a 1-2-3 Greyhounds sweep in both events with times of 4:43.40 and 9:42.21. Jonah Goodman took second in the 500 with a time of 4:44.52, and Pierre LeRoy was third in 4:47.91. Goodman came back with a second (9:44.37) in the 1,000, while Kiernan Leary finished third in 9:56.12.
  • Hersick won two diving events in his collegiate debut, scoring 252.23 points in the 1-meter version and 234.9 in the 3-meter.

Simko Wins A Pair On Women’s Side

  • Simko won two races for the women, capturing the top spot in both breaststroke events.
  • She bested the field in the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.96 with Stimmel (1:07.39) and Kiera McGrath (1:08.22) taking third and fourth in the race.
  • Simko also won the 200 breaststroke in 2:24.51.

Three More Women Win Individual Events

  • Riley Zinger won the first event of her Loyola career, the 1,000 freestyle with a swim of 10:31.85 for a victory by more than 13 seconds.
  • Haley Robinson took first in the 50 freestyle in 23.96, edging Tulio who swam 24.05.
  • Moser was a winner in the 100 freestyle in 52.84 with Tulio (53.22) and Stimmel (53.28) logging third- and fourth-place finishes.

Four Men Also Capture Top Spots

  • Mueller was a winner in the 200 freestyle, swimming 1:41.84 to lead Loyola to a 1-2-3 finish. Zach Reid was second in 1:44.27, and Floyd Conlin finished third in 1:44.81.
  • The Greyhounds finished in the top three slots, as well, in the 200 butterfly with Harry Hearn leading the way. He swam 1:52.79, while Cameron Shinnick finished second in 1:53.82 and Owen Glaser was third in 1:54.43.
  • Patrick Hayburn followed his two second-place finishes in the sprint freestyle events with a win in the 100 butterfly. He swam 49.99 to lead Loyola in the top four spots. Hearn (50.40), Shinnick (50.49) and Muller (50.64) were the next three finishers.
  • Verheyen won the 200 IM by almost three seconds, swimming 1:54.61. Gozdan took second in 1:57.61, Lane Bradshaw was third in 1:59.31, and Conlin took fourth in 1:59.31.

BALTIMORE – Lehigh women’s swimming and diving suffered a 176-124 loss to Loyola Saturday in the season opener. 

Fifth-year Sarah Hardy recorded two first-place finishes. Hardy won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:04.73 and the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.60. Hardy also came in third in the 200-yard backstroke (2:06.81).

Sophomore Mairin Ludwig was also a bright spot, recording 17 individual points. Ludwig won the 500-yard freestyle (5:05.83), took second in the 200-yard IM (2:08.93) and took second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.79). 

The Mountain Hawks tallied eight points in the 1000-yard freestyle. Natalie Martin came in second (10:45.27), Dagny Donaldson took third (10:48.00), and Lily Van Der Sman tallied a fifth-place mark (11:03.50)

Lehigh had a two-three punch in the 200–yard breaststroke after Cailtin Hoffmann took second in (2:28.25) and Danielle Prekop came in third (2:28.74). 

Caitlin Deitch scored nine individual points with a second-place mark in the 100-yard freestyle (53.12), a  third-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (57.75)  and a fourth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (24.41). 

Junior diver Sarah Gill once again dominated on the board. Gill grabbed 18 points for the Mountain Hawks after winning the one-meter dive and the three-meter dive. In the one-meter, Gill recorded 242.63 points. 

First-year fiver Kate Whitaker grabbed three points after taking third in the one-meter dive with 210.60 points. 

The Mountain Hawks will look to bounce back when they host West Chester in the home opener on Oct. 20.
