Regan Smith surprised us by breaking the 3rd oldest LCM American record last night in the 200 fly, dropping a massive 2:03.87. This also makes her the 4th fastest performer of all-time in the event.

This adds even more intrigue to Smith’s potential event schedule at the US World Champ Trials at the end of this month, where she could swim 100/200 fly, 100/200 back, and 200 IM (all of which she is the fastest American this year) and not even double up on events any day of the meet. The 2022-2023 LCM Women 200 Butterfly is missing Hali Flickinger from the Speedo Rankings.
Flickinger hadn’t swum it this year till 6/3/23, in the prelims of the Sun Devil Open. Hali’s first 200 Fly of the year was the prelim where she went the #1 USA time of the competitive year in 2:06.80, which surpassed Regan’s 2:07.92 from PSS-Westmont. When I last checked SwimCloud, the 2023 Sun Devil Open swims from this weekend were not yet posted.
One of the most interesting aspects of race day, culminating in breaking of a 14 year-old American Record, is that Regan went into this local race seeded #3, with her 2:07.92 from 2023 PSS-Westmont (though #1 of American 2022-23 swims, she was still #3 seed in this meet), swimming in the first of the three seeded heat… Read more »

I don’t think she’ll swim the 50 back. She should be pretty much certain that she’ll win the 100 so she will automatically get the spot. But I agree that her 4 events will be the ones you listed. I don’t think she’ll qualify for either the 100 fly or 200IM but even if she did I don’t think she would swim them.

I think Bob’s mental approach has also been a difference maker. Having coached swimmers who have said publicly that they suffered from anxiety / depression, I assume Bob’s toolkit includes more than technical / stroke / or pace knowledge. I imagine there’s a whole team
In Arizona that has each other’s backs because they understand the toll starring at a black line can take and are all willing and eager to address that demon. I remember Phelps said in a interview after the 200fly in Beijing that bob broke his google one time to help deal in situations during meets (because Phelps googles where full of water after the race in Beijing in 200 fly)
I have to agree. Also consider that at the other end of experience level, Sophomore to be Jonny Kulow who was ranked 52 out of high school, after one school year of training with Bob Bowman, set the top 100 LCM time in the nation this year and is still only 18!
My guess is he swims with Herbie close to 100%. Bowman is running the entire show but he’s probably not running the day to day with Kulow.
Agree! The coaches were at a team. I believe Hurbie handles much of the day to day work.
MP has spoken at length about on-deck verbal brawls with Bowman throughout his career and especially leading into 2012 when his will to show up for practice diminished. Allison Schmitt markedly regressed in her swimming under Bowman after 2012, and it was not until being pushed by Phelps in 2015 (three years after Schmitt’s quiet post-London Olympics depression set in) that Schmitt sought therapy for depression.

Depression/anxiety are insidious diseases that can have no known etiology, and I am not as certain as you are that Bob Bowman’s “toolkit”, “science”, and “magic” (or his ASU staff) are as equipped to recognize and handle mental illnesses as you might think. (Nor should… Read more »
Regarding Bowman’s “mental approach” and his ASU support team, it is known that in connection with the 2011 aggressive text message incident revealed in 2018 involving Bowman and the Burckles that ASU issued a reprimand to Bowman and he issued an apology.

But did USA Swimming (or SafeSport) ever undertake its own investigation and/or issue any statement regarding Bowman’s behavior prior to re-naming him to highest-level National Team coaching roles? Would think that might be fairly important from an insurance coverage standpoint. Have not been able to find any USA Swimming statement on the matter, which is somewhat surprising.
Bob Bowman. Period. You want to be the best in the world? Go swim with him. What he’s doing at ASU and with his Pro Group is amazing.
As one who follows and attends the ASU meets I have to agree with you. And the swimmers also agree that his approach to training is something special. Both the pro group and the undergrads who often train together. Where else can a kid just starting college find himself sharing a lane in practice with an reigning Olympic Gold Medalist?

Collegiate swimming isn’t for everyone.
No, no, no. Dropping out of a tough academic situation is proving to be one of the best turnarounds. She could have quit school and gone anywhere and with any coach and had the results you saw this past weekend.
She could have remained at Stanford as a pro and did not.
Katie Ledecky could have remained at Stanford as a professional but decided to take the Nesty Plunge. Simone Manuel could have remained at Stanford as a professional but left for Tennessee. Brooke Forde could have remained at Stanford as a professional but decided not to pursue a career in swimming. It’s rats jumping off a sinking ship.

Simone Manuel won 3x gold in perhaps the most competitive event and Forde dropped 8 seconds in the 500 free/made the Olympic team while training under Meehan? Regan is doing v well under Bowman but this comment is kinda weird.
Not everyone wants to be a professional athlete and Manuel from the 2016-2020 quad was about as opposite of a failure as you can get

Are you serious? Doesn’t work that way bro. I have heard several people over the years trying to claim that when someone is talented that it doesn’t matter who their coach is…that they’d be as successful no matter who coached them…and that is a joke! I’d like for you to ask any athlete that reached the top of their sport if they credit their coach to any of their success. I guarantee you that 100% of the time the coach gets and deserves a lot of credit.
