Diogo Ribeiro Clocks 23.19 50 Fly To Rank #2 In The World This Season

2023 PORTUGAL OPEN

The 2023 Portugal Open concluded last night from Funchal but not before Diogo Ribeiro topped another podium.

After already reaping gold here in the 100m free and 100m fly, 18-year-old Ribeiro earned the top spot in the men’s 50m fly.

The teen produced a winning effort of 23.19 to get to the wall first, leaving World Record holder Andrii Govorov with silver and Gabriel Dias with bronze. Govorov touched in 23.40 while Dias rounded out the top 3 in 23.77.

For Ribeiro, his effort represents the 5th fastest time of his young career, one which boasts a lifetime best of 22.96 from when he claimed gold at the 2022 World Junior Championships.

His time from this meet dips under the 23.53 needed for World Championships qualification, as does Govorov’s result. As for Dias, his 23.77 qualifies him for the inaugural LEN U23 Championships in Dublin.

Ribeiro now ranks as the 2nd fastest performer in the world this season, sitting only behind Thomas Ceccon of Italy who leads the rankings with his swift 23.23 from February’s Lausanne Swim Cup.

Martins captured 200m free gold for the women, clocking a time of 2:00.05. That scored a new national record, overtaking her own previous standard of 2:00.96 put on the books last year.

Lopes topped the men’s 800m free podium with a result of 8:06.47 to qualify for Dublin.

At the end of yesterday session, there was a time trial for the 4× 100m free, were Miguel Duarte Nascimento, from Benfica, opened the relay in 21.91, dipping under the Olympics Cut. Portugal now has 3 swimmers qualified in 5 events. Great racing this weekend I’m Funchal, and a great atmosphere in the pool as well, for sure.
